You need an extension tube for your macro shot.

Yes, I'm aware of that I'm targetting to get the ZD Macro lens (either the 50mm or the newer 35mm, depending on budget).

pardon my ignorance. but an extension tube can only let u focus closer right? not magnify the object?

Extension tubes are designed to enable a lens to focus closer than its normal set minimum focusing distance. Getting closer has the effect of magnifying your subject (making it appear larger in the viewfinder and in your pictures). They are exceptionally useful for macro photography, enabling you to convert almost any lens into a macro lens at a fraction of the cost while maintaining its original optical quality.

Check out the link to see what extension tube can do for your lens.

Like you due to budget constrain, I bought the extension tube.

How often do you take macro shot ? Is it worth buying a macro lens ?

I take macros quite a bit you know

I would prefer a dedicated macro lens over the extension tube, as the macro lens would be giving me a greater working distance... The extension reduces the focusing distance to gain magnification which is not exactly what I wanted especially with the sensitive little insects.

And I'm of the opinion that I'll be better off with the macro lens as it will give better results, besides, with the macro lens I'll also have a good standard portrait lens, and a short telephoto lens.

I think the 35mm macro will not cost more than S$400.

the dragonfly shot is blur. either its handshake or u need to refine the focus by manual fine adjustment.

keep them coming bro... the ZD 50mm is calling ur name.

for shooting of sensitive insects - you might be better off with 40-150 or 50-200, extension tube and closeup filter. it allows closer focusing without scaring away the insect at half a metre range(usual range at >1.0m without extension).

for shooting of close up flower shoot - definitely 50mm. allows you focus 5 cm from len filter to the flower. 50mm can also take close up of stupid bees, dead insects or red ant holding on to leaves for nest build up (sampe pic below) at extreme close up range. not to mention that it is the best portrait lens in zuiko digital line up.

Hmmm.... so if given a choice, you guys will go for the EX-25 plus zoom lens option as opposed to the single macro lens option?

CHiPs - Since you have both options, can share which do you prefer and why?

Agree with you the dragonfly shot is blur. I don't think it's handshake cos shutter speeds were at 1/1000. It's more the photographer's inability to manual fine adjust focus, just relied on autofocus instead.

ZD 50mm here I come!!

I prefer the EX-25 with the zoom , because of the zoom power ,
not to get to close to them OR they will say bye bye to you .!

But ,still need the 50mm for portraits & slower insect. If you can get very close to them.

Wow! Your insect shots looks amazing! Great DOF, sharpness and the wonderful Oly colours. Among the better macros I have seen around. How much for the EX-25? Must find sponsor liao... Was thinking of getting the 35mm macro but now...

Thanks for the input, CHiPs.

I only got budget for either one Will need to test out both before deciding.

For shooting butterflies, it got to be the combination of 40-150mm zoom lens & EXT25

http://myfourthirds.pixelcritic.com/...t.php?id=15445

It gives me some working distance for this closeup shot

Cheers,
Patrick Ho

Hitman, I think is worth trying out the EX25. Anyway if you are not happy with the performance, EX25 works flawlessly with 50mm macro. So there is nothing do loose.

Patrick - this is beautiful. You'd made use of an excellent yet economical combo, both the 40-150 and EX-25 to take this great shot. Seems like even the budget Zuiko Digital 40-150 is able to produce very sharp and delicate scene. Also, the use of FP-TTL High-speed sync flash as fill in is brilliant. You also deserve a technical award!

Thanks for sharing, it's nice.
