Post [ortega] Hands on the Nikon Coolpix P900

    Nikon's marketing claims that

"Take ultra high-power zoom to the next level with the new 16.1-megapixel P900 and get closer to your subjects with 83x optical zoom (24mm -2000mm equivalent in 35mm format) and 166x Dynamic Fine Zoom*1 (approximately 4000mm equivalent in 35mm format). With the new Dual Detect Optical Vibration Reduction (VR) feature, your shots are stabilised at a shutter speed of approximately 5.0 stops*2 faster, letting you capture clearer imagery. Shoot with the Electronic Viewfinder (EVF) with eye sensor, or flip out the 3-inch vari-angle LCD monitor for more unique photo compositions. Connect to your smart devices with ease by simply using the built-in Wi-Fi or NFC*3. All in a compact and stylish body, with a rechargeable Li-ion battery that delivers the longest battery life in its class."

Top panel controls with PSAM, GPS and stereo microphones

You can control the zoom via the T and W rocker switch on the shutter release or on the side of the lens
You are reminded on the awesome zooming power

    on the other side

NFC convenience and another reminder of its powerful zoom

The camera can be charged via the USB port (yeah! less chargers to carry around)
HDMI port to connect to a TV

    Deep grip

Another reminder about the powerful zoom, Zoom control and a handy button to quickly zoom out when you press it and zoom back in when you release

On the bottom, you will find the standard tripod mount and door for the battery and SD Card
Notice that the Coolpix P900 is made in Indonesia

Personally I think that the tripod mount should be in line with the lens and not on one side

    EN-EL23 1850mAh Battery

On actual usage i manage to shoot 367 still images and 17 videos before the battery ran out of juice

Now that is amazing zooming power, shooting at 2000mm is not easy, best is to use a tripod, even in daylight
surprisingly the image quality at full digital zoom is quite good

strangely this camera default has a hazy look to the images

note the black point in the histogram

as with all cameras, take some time to get to know the camera
at first I tried to under expose but it did not correct the hazyness
it seems that this is the default for still images

    videos are better

awesome zoom power. btw how did you correct the haziness in the photos? just move the black point slider? any tweak that we can do in-camera?

i couldn't correct it in camera, yup just move the black point slider
I was frustrated with the picture quality at first, but after getting to know the camera a little better and finding out it's weakness and strengths, you can still get decent quality images.
The image quality at full digital zoom is amazing.
