Default SIA plane to take part in NDP flypast for the first time

SINGAPORE - For the first time, a Singapore Airlines (SIA) aircraft will take part in the National Day flypast.

To mark Singapore's 50th birthday, an SIA Airbus 380 in a special livery featuring a Singapore flag-themed design will take to the skies.

The plane with the official SG50 logo on the inboard engines and the NDP 2015 'Majulah Singapura - Our Golden Jubilee' logo on the underside will make its flypast over the Marina Bay area at the closing of the Vintage Parade segment of the show.

The event will also feature 20 SIA Girls on trishaws, reminiscent of famous SIA advertisements of the past, the airline said on Friday.

SIA chief executive officer Goh Choon Phong said the airline's success is "closely linked to that of Singapore, and like all Singaporeans we look forward to celebrating the nation's birthday on Aug 9".

"We are honoured to be participating in the National Day Parade during Singapore's Golden Jubilee year, with the world's largest passenger aircraft in the aerial flypast and our iconic Singapore Girl cabin crew in the Vintage Parade," he said.

The public will be able to view the A-380 in the aerial flypast for the first time on Aug 1 during the preview show, ahead of National Day.

SIA will have two aircraft in the special livery up to the end of this year, serving Beijing, Hong Kong, London, Mumbai, New Delhi, Shanghai, Sydney and Zurich.

To all peeps shooting at the preview or actual day tommorow. This is probably once in a lifetime.

Will the Singapore Girls be parachuting from the plane too?

There will be a few other things happening on NDP thats not "public" yet.

The A380 I knew about a month ago.

Will the black knights be flanking the a380? can you confirm?

Unlikely. Fighter jets can't go that slow as passenger jets can do (iirc).

I hope it don't land at kallang leisure park.
Over there they don't like uniformed personnel involved in nation building.

They can fly slow if needed to, else fighter jets won't be able to escort those plane with any threats (eg bomb, terroist threats etc). During Air-to-Air refueling they have to fly at slow speed too.
Had saw a F-16 flew at a very slow speed at low level height before during one of the airshow at Open house many years ago.

    a) Define $slow, please. Human perception of 'slow' is easily deceived.
    b) Escorting happens at faster speeds than take off / landing speed.
My estimation is based on the fact that fighter jets are built for a different purpose which comes with draw-backs for flying at lower speeds. That's the reason why people came up with the flexible wing construction for some jets: better flight characteristics at lower speed.
Secondly: did you notice how high the jets fly during the NDP? Simple: it appears slower from ground, more time for the spectators to watch.

Life is already so difficult, everytime everything has to explain so much, give numbers and measurement?? So if I tell my mum I am hungry, she will ask me how hungry is hungry?
Tell taxi uncle can go faster as I am late, he/she going ask me "how fast is fast?"

I did not have a speed detector at that time when F-16 flying slow speed at low height, so I am so sorry that I can't tell u how slow it was during that very moment.
(I am on duty that day so at that time just happened doing crowd control at the viewing stand stand area at Paya Lebar Open House)

And no, it not taking off or landing, it just showing the public that it able to fly low and slow to try avoid enemy detection and low chance of it showing on enemy radar etc. But understand it will waste more fuel as it need to keep aircraft at a angle to maintain aircraft lifting in air and to keep the engine running.

The slow speed low height flypast is not landing or take off. Take off need high speed to get the thrust needed to lift the aircraft up from the ground.

The speed of aircraft are normally measure in knot, as the speed of sound is different at different altitude.
Mach 1.0 = speed of sound, but speed of sound is not constant at different sea level.

I worked in the Airforce before with fighter jets so we need to study aerodynamic. I am not a pilot nor any degree or scholar, but still know the basic of those lifting etc (need to pass exam and yearly need to re-authorize, so not choice need to study).

All aircraft (body and wings) do get flex during fight, just that we can't see with our eyes. So those engineer need to build in a way that the internal stress and fatigue get distribute out. And inspection need to be carry out at different interval to check any sign of crack, damage etc.
The movable wings u mentioned is to get less aerodynamic drag.

When aircraft landing, it not only fly slow, the wings also has parts that move to slow down the plane and break the lifting force. Same for take off, speed alone is not enough. (eg spoiler, aileron, speed brake etc)

Anyway my point is just to highlight fighter jets don't only can fly fast. They can fly at same speed as propeller engine aircraft also, eg when our C130 need to refuel aircraft on air.

Jumbo jet can fly faster and do more then they normally do (sharp banking/turning etc), but of cos they won't do that as passengers safety is important and they won't want to stress the plane. And they are not that slow as other think they are.

    Cheers.

Because numbers are simple and clear. In contrast to your lengthy posting that completely misses the question raised.
Let's wait for someone with more in depth knowledge, shall we?

Fighter jets can match the speed of passenger planes.
Passenger planes fly at transonic speeds of about Mach 0.85-0.9.
This speed is also where combat takes place, so fighter jets are optimized for that speed.

In any case, the landing (ground) speed of A380 is ~140knots. The F16 landing speed is 120-170 knots, depending on weight. If you assume at landing the planes descend with constant velocity, then lift = weight, therefore the planes can actually maintain flight at those speeds. In other words, both planes seem able to maintain a slow, 140 knot speed flight.

And also, for the F16, the thrust-to-weight ratio is greater than 1. This means if you can somehow make the plane get nose-up vertical, its jet (actually a low bypass turbofan) can hold the plane at that altitude, i.e. zero speed. Provided, of course, the pilot can keep the plane at that position.

F-16 (naked weight) speed before stall 150-160(nominal).
F-15 (naked weight) speed before stall 120(nominal).

However, very much depending on the skill of the pilot and the AOA he applied at that instance(subjective ya...). Head wind and tail wind plays a major roll.

Both 15 & 16 are multirole, capable of doing low speed COBRA feat, proven during airshows.

The 15 will be a better option due it's bigger wing area, more airdrag means more lift at lower speed.

    Happy SG50 and long weekends

Pretty sure the F16 can fly beside the A380.
