Default Advise on Canon Pricing

Hi Bros.

After many many years with nikon, I have just taken the plunge to sell off most of my nikon equipment. Planning to join the Canon family but would like to plan properly, to maximise my dollar.

One of the main reasons of joining Canon is becos I can use the 4 Carl Zeiss Lens that I own (through adaptors). I have the 28-85mm, 50mm F1.4, 100mm Makro and Sonnar 180mm.

Would love to get a Canon EOS 5D (and am complete) but apparently it is beyond my budget. In the interim, I'm thinking of getting the cheapest body with cropped sensor (EOS 350D) and a 17-40mmL. When the price of FF comes down, I hope to buy a FF and be complemented with the available lenses that I own (and have the 350D as a cheap teleconverter or holiday camera.)

For bros who has done the latest market research, pls enlighten the following:

1. What is the lowest price for 350D body only? From which shop?

2. Roughly, what is the lowest price for 17-40L? From Which shop?

Actually I go up to Hong Kong quite regularly for work (will be there next weekend), it is better and cheaper to buy the lens from there? If yes, from which shop?

And Lastly, do any bros think that what I plan to do is a waste of time, and should not even think of EOS 350D (and go straight for 5D?)

Many thanks,

Check out the prices at the sticky here:

Or you could always give each shop a call/ask for a quote if in doubt.

Is it just me or is the 350D a really expensive choice for a teleconverter.

I was thinking, by having 2 digital format (one with cropped sensor), you will automatically extend the focal range. May not be a good thing too, as too many choices sometimes is confusing too....

Was really disappointed with the 350D's built, when I went down to AP today. Dun mean to offend anyone here, in terms of ergonomics and built, it is not as reassuring as D70, though they are about the same price range......... May have to consider the more expensive 20D

go for the 20D; no point buying a 350D, then you don't feel good about it, and end up selling the 350D to fund a 20D

Just my personal view; while the 350D is in the same price range as your ex D70s, somehow the handling and the feel is not quite the same. And if you tried the 350 and 20D together, you would go for the 20D

why not consider a 10D??....It may be a cheaper and lower-end alternative to the 20D.....

Nah don't get the 10D. Its around the same as a 300D, might as well get a 350D. The writing speed is way faster than both those cameras. And the 10D doesn't support EF-S lenses.

Makes perfect sense if you have a 5D and 350D at the same time...
350D would then only be a backup + teleconvertor....

Welcome to the world of canon. Let's be frank, if you intend to switch to canon, I suggest you go straight to 5D. Why? because all Nikon DSLR are 1.5X croup and all canon EOS 20D & below are 1.6X croup!

It does not make sense you give up the Nikon 1.5 croup & join the canon 1.6 croup, yes, canon have EFS lenses for the 1.6 croup camera, but Nikon also have the DX digital lens for the 1.5 croup.

With the full frame 5D you will enjoy bigger & brighter viewfinder, smooth and creamy film like image and is the must for all wideangle lover.

If you can afford go for the full frame 5D.

you are rite bro.... but the price for 5D is way too high, buy now and be prepared to suffer a bad depreciation!

Meanwhile, maybe I'll stick to chromes first, hoping for price to fall to $3K region before I get my first FF

Yes, actually I have been putting off purchasing a 350D is mainly because of it's built factor. The grip is too thin and that's in fact had already discouraged me from purchasing. The 20D grip and built is good so that's the only choice.

Why need a 350D as a teleconvertor just because of the 1.6x cropping ? Why not just simplying crop your images out of the FF 5D from Photoshop ?

Cropping out from the 5D will result in somewhat lower resolution of only 5 MP

To get the same resolution as the 350d, the FF camera will need to have a resolution of 20.5 MP

Considered a 1.3x 1D instead? Prices have come down to almost new 20D levels. This workhorse still has many good years left. Great AF, fast write speeds, low noise, fast frame count and awesome built quality.
