Default Slave speedlite delay issues? or is it normal?

Hi Guys, i am super excited right now because i just bought myself a couple of light stands, adapters etc. from Orient Photos and ready to start learning how to do some indoor/studio-ish photography.

I am using speedlites (no budget for those 300w/400w studio quality strobes) both the 580EX II and 600EX RT. I connected the 600EX RT via my Yongnuo flash trigger and set it as master, while the 580EX II was set to slave. everything worked perfectly.

However i noticed that my 580EX II (Slave) was only triggered like.. a split second or one second after the master has fired off... is this normal? Or am i just seeing the pre flash from the 600EX RT and thought that was the main flash?

Also... may i just verify that Canon Speedlites cannot be triggered by another source of flash? Thanks!

ETTL is sending pre-flash to determine how much power output to deliver for the actual flash, and optical slave flash will take act on any flashes they sense it.

try set all the flash unit to manual flash power output and it will work fine.

Hi Catchlights, i was just thinking... i thought that the slave will be trigger via the infra-red sensor of the master? Are you saying that the flash from the master triggers the slave instead?

    Thanks for clarifying =)

Iirc, the ex600rt needs to be on the camera hot shoe and set to master ir mode for it to be able to trigger the 580. Putting a yongnuo trigger between the camera and 600 will give you lots of problems.

Hmmm so my setup of have a yongnuo between my cam and 600ex rt (master ) then syncing the 600ex rt to my 580ex ii (slave) will not work?

Did u check whether the subject is properly lighted up by your 580exii slave?

In theory, the yongnuo triggers shouldn't cause any delays.
