Ok, unless I am really outdated already......since I dun mixed around for the last couple of years.
Your title ask "if someone bought you...."

So if It's me, I will accept it, and I'm will not blame anything bad on the giver.

As for giving gifts to other people.
    1) Play safe by asking around what is acceptable gifts
    2) Learn to respect other people race/religon/culture, not just chinese.

I would scold the person for not buying me a D2X or 70-200VR but a pair of shoes

shoes have several meanings. cantonese say 'hai hai sheng' meaning sighing.
or if you give your bf/gf, he or she would 'run lion'. best is give that person back some money... ranging from S$0.10 to S$1...

give clock means song zhong.. asking that person go & die..

give socks means you want to become enemy. cantonese say 'li zor chor yad, ngor zor sup mmm..' erm..

handkerchief means parting /break up, the person would cry for you though..

one item i noticed, never give ring unless you two getting engaged. else the couple sure breaks up. so far i seen 10/10 couples

think got some more.. i go think

No leh, my gf and I still going strong despite me giving her a ring. She wear it for special occasion only, no pressure from me to wear it's just a present. Heh.

I'd be damn happy if it was a pair of nice shoes. But I seriously wonder how anyone can get shoes because not all shoes with the same size feel good and comfy.
