Here is my simple way to check a lens.
1. smell it (new lens got a unique smell one).
2. look at exterior, and note if any scratch or marking come off, judge the price for that.
3. open the aperture to max, and look at front and then look at back, towards a bring shiny spot, eg cloudy sky or white whfluorescent light, if u see a bit of dust inside it is normal, if u see fungus (look like spider web) then the lens is not very good.
4. after visual inspection, then turn and rotate the focus ring, zoom ring, and feel it smooth or not.
5. check got box or manual or warranty card or receipt, this is just to make sure u are not buying "stolen" goods.
