So far I found a lots of good reviews of this lens. Quality for the price is also Excelent. Make sure you buy the APO version (not the non APO version). Arto. |

The older 70-300mm F4-5.6 APO Macro II (Nikon mount) is now out of stock in most shops, and this newer 70-300mm F4-5.6 APO DG Macro just arrived in Singapore. I saw a few in TCW: interestingly the box and lens are new, but the manual is the older one (from the 70-300mm F4-5.6 APO Macro II).
Bought it for my wife's D50: it does suffer some zoom creep even when new, and its pretty soft at 300mm end. The sharp part appears to be from 70-240mm (f8 onwards). Interestingly it can do macro at the 200-300mm end: results nowhere close to my Tamron 90mm (Canon mount), but its 1/2 price of the Tamron For the price of $320++ its a no-brainer. The Sigma 55-200 DC (for digital only) is already about $300. The 70-300 APO, on the other hand, can be used on FF sensor or film bodies. Here's shot of the moon using my wife's lens: ![]() cheers, |

Where is TCW? Is it on Adelphy? What is the Aperture you are using for the moon shoot? Open wide? Is it on the tele 300mm setting? Thanks! Arto. |

Ok, I've got it today. TCW $330 (inc GST).
Funny things, like obrag say, it is looks like the box changed to new one, but the manual still the old one. It is also have an aperture ring, as the seller say it is Nikon's mount (actually I prefer without an aperture ring) which is always have an aperture ring. The new DC series is without aperture ring (but this 70-300 don't have the DC series yet). This is the DG series, which is still have an aperture ring, but the lens' coating is for Digital Camera one. Is it true??? The build quality for lens' exterior is not as good as I thought before, since the white letter on the body (black rubber type body) is looks like easily removed just by nail. I wonder how long it will be last there before I accidentally scratch it (maybe I need to wear glove to use it ).The optical's quality, not yet, I will go out for some testing this afternoon (but looks like it will be rain this afternoon ).Regards, Arto. |

Hope you do realise the set has no warranty (as per most equipment purchased from TCW).

Wow...
I feel D70s' Battery drop so fast with this lens. Maybe because autofocus need more power than my kit's lens. Do some shot outdoor, too bad, all wrong setting on WB (set to flash!). No RAW, only jpeg. Arto. |

Hehe... shop warranty is as good as no warranty, if you check the prices of the warrantied set, you'll probably find you didn't save much. Ok, stop here, I don't want to keep harping on this

Another problem,
The rear cap of Nikon (from the rear of D70s' kit lens) can not fit on this sigma. It is a bit hard and I don't want to give presure too much (afraid it will break something there). Looks like sigma one is fit on D70s' kit lens. Arto |

Few days ago I call MS, they don't have a stock. I got it $330, after calculate the taxi fare, it is about the same if I got $320 + $10 taxi fare. It is come with warranty card, but they say no need to send. Within 1 year just contact the shoop. Also 7 days one to one exchange. Check my gallery for this lens test at 200mm and 300mm. Only 3 photos. Too bad I am forgot to check the ASA. ASA still 800. I should bring it to 400 to lower the noise. Nikon should let us see ASA setting easily in information LCD, not only when we press ASA button. Arto. Last edited by Artosoft; 23rd September 2005 at 09:19 AM. |

The lens was originally designed for 35mm cameras thus the aperture ring as most Nikon film cams (except f80, f100, f5, f6) do not have the aperture control dial. Optically it is a very good lens, many of my students bought this for their AF cams.
Personally, I think it's one of the best consumer tele zoom lens in the market, few have yet to rival it. Even though I'd never owned it as I am a firm believe in 80-200 f/2.8 or nothing. |

I had this lense for about 6 months. Its so so. For the price you pay, you cannot ask for more, right? The colours from this lense are a bit off. In digital, you can adjust them. But I shot film with this lense and I was always cribbing about the colour. Use this lense at f8. It should be fine.

RRP at Sigma SG is $1998 if that is the lens. http://sigma-marketing.com.sg So outside price might be lower by few hundred.. |
