To those who had used both F80 & F90(x),
Need some advice from you. I am thinking of getting either F80 or F90(x). a) Which is better in term of quality and usage ? b) Is there any difference in the metering accuracy ? c) Which is of greater ease of handling ? Hopefully only good serious advice is needed... ![]() |

Nikon F80 released in 2000.
Nikon F90x released in 1994. 6 years of technological difference. F80 shutter is really really quiet though.. compared to loud clanky F90.

F90x AF is more responsive and jerky. it only has one AF point. aperture have to control from the aperture ring. that means G lens cant really use it in A mode. but f90x grip have second shutter button. f80 grip dont have second shutter button

Both are good, F90X is strong and heave, can take abuse, the favored camera for professional next to a F4. F80 is light and felt very plastic in hands compare to F90X. If your want all the entire features and strong built of Nikon film camera, get a F100, is it very cheap also nowaday. |

I doubt there is a low mileage F90[x] around but if I were to choose one for my 'workhorse', I would go for the F80. Build quality sure F90[x] is more proven , but during time and usage the camera life will decrease. It might conk up faster than a new F80 [can you get new F90x ?] Metering accuracy, when I was using it I never felt anything + with film the 'dynamic range' is much better than on digital. Hence 1 or 2 stop UE diff won't really kill you. Ease of handling both are easy to handle. On demand grid on the F80 is quite good for architectural / landscape work , but there are many VF option for the F90 family. If you can get a mint F90x for less than $300 , grab it. But if not, spend a bit more on a new / younger F80 ![]() PS : I still keep my F90 and sold away my F80 ... just incase I want to shoot slides. No special reason, just because it's my first camera only ![]() |

If you're an amateur, F80 is the best camera for you. Ken Rockwell has a fabulous write up on it, if you wish to read up. He compares the F80 against the F100.
And these days, you can get a used F80 that is still fairly new for around 400 bucks, which is very cheap becos many have switched to digital. Get a used F80 and if you don't like it, sell it way for the same price you got it! I wanted to sell away my F80 which I have used for less than a year, but got poor responds in the BnS and very low price. I decided to keep it and shoot a roll or two from time to time.

Thanks to all for the advice. I will consider between F90x and F80 against F100. In term of pricing, I have no preference on a new one or a old set. Like what B18 pointed out was that can I still get a new F90x ?
Catchlight mentioned a very good option or on F100... but I need to go and check out the price and feature of F100 and evaluate my choices... Thanks to all for the great advice - Cheers to all... |

I either wait for Nikon to come out with a FF DSLR, or save up till I got about 1.5K to get a second hand F100 or even get a F80. |

I can get F100 and F80, but still considering hard whether to get one or not. I am those stingy type who think before buying things. $1.5k is still money. A beggar maybe dirty and filthy, but he might be more wealthy than a rich man. Thanks for the encouragement ! ![]() |
