IMHO, it is not really wrong to say "upgrade". Sensor performance wise, going FF (from crop sensor -of the same brand- for example) will indeed give you the needed upgrade. But perhaps there's a downgrade somewhere else.. perhaps worse AF points, slower max aperture speed, etc.

Anyway, with bigger sensor comes bigger responsibility

Like the way he put it.... It is the moron behind the camera that matters

I can see differences in image quality between APSC and FF comparing cameras of the same era.
this video is pretty interesting with facts in it. but to compare DSLR, only apsc, apsh(Canon) and FF comes in.
MF and LF or even 1 inch sensor are different.
personally the term "upgrade" is used may have different definitions in it and is subjective to individual.
however from my observation, "upgrade" is used mainly based on price factors then follow by features.
most of the time FF will cost more than smaller sensor.
5D2 to a 1D4 is an upgrade or downgrade?and why?

Ya and some people will, perhaps cynically so, point out 'wah you use full frame your photo so lousy'. Hahaha.

The best upgrade is to upgrade your skill...

The best money spent is to go on trips with amazing scenery and people after you gained the skills...
