One of those 'right place, right time' shots. Good thing you were ready. Well done!

My only constructive comment would be that it would be wonderful to see the diver's face instead of his side profile.

Hmmm... I would like to see more diver and shark interaction...

another factor that irked me about the photo is that the shark is cropped off..

But on the flip side, i Loooove the lighting.. gives alot of contrast..

care to share your post processing techniques? Wonderful colour and detail in the wetsuit.

You wouldnt want to see his face...u will get nightmare..

Anyway....I prefer side profile than front..my focus is to shoot the diver facing eye to eye with the shark....

And thanks for the comment

Nice balance between ambient and fill in lighting. Seems like the D70 can handle the gradualting blue water colour well without the common digital contouring ring effect.

But trying to relate the photo to the caption, it appear as if it is the photographer that signalled the diver to look back at the shark. Pespective would be better if the shark is positioned approaching the diver head on, and the photo shows diver's eye staring at the shark....... but I know, things are not so easy underwater, especially with a swimming shark. So still an interesting shot nevertheless.

I think the "common digital contouring ring effect" for gradual colour changes you mentioned is a JPG format artifact. JPG algo is best suited to rapidly changing adjacent colours. Of course for JPG shooting, the "fine" setting (i.e. higher Q level) will minimize how apparent the artifacting is.

However if he was shooting raw this effect may not be noticible. (Depending on how it was later digitally processed).

PS Nice Shot! Love the curve of the baby shark, like he was posing.

now on the pic:

It looked as if the shark and photographer is not on teh same plane. Like one of them is pasted on or further away. That takes away the effect somewhat if u r talking about eye to eye.....
