Default FZ-20 AF question

Hi! anyone encounter this before?
I'm trying to set the AF to 3-area-focusing and have set-it in the menu but i keep getting 1-area-focusing when take photo in any mode a big square when i half-press the shutter
I've tried resetting the camera but no help.
Any advise?

If i'm not wrong it's too dark or there's no area of contrast, thus it has to "step back" and take a bigger area. For example, focusing on a white wedding gown, or focusing on a black cardboard.
