Lighting was poor and I had to struggle with ISO3200 all the way, with a 300mm f/4.
One of the team, the 3rd team, fell twice. Well, bad luck but the crowd cheered the loudest for them.

Great pictures Don. Thanx for sharing your settings, was just about to ask you when I read your follow-on post.

Was there on Thursday night trying to shoot, but too dark for my D70 . Max ISO is only 1600 & it was not good enough.

Question: Does a flash still help at such a distance? Using the 70-300mm lens.

Sad enough, no flash allowed as the performers were doing dangerous stunts and might distract them.

Some sports/events don't allow the use of flash, eg. gymnastics etc. Besides bumping up the ISO you can try investing in a faster lens, eg. the 70-200mm f/2.8 VR. Hope it helps.

it really depends on the GN of the flash. any photo solely illuminated by direct flash, will look flat and unappealing.

Well, that depands on how u capture the moment. All this action shots have a certain rhythm within it & that is the way for testing ur skill. Knowing the next move is really important when shooting this sort of action. There r few ways of shooting action shots. Like:-
1) Panning with the subject(s) movement.
2) Intercept a jump when is reach to a certain height like the gymnastics.
3) Zoom in or zoom out of the subject (provided it doesn't move in a short while) if u got a chance when using slow shutter speed & a tripod.
4) Which ever ur own method u think u can capture a nice pic(s)

This are just some of my another no brainer suggestion again dude. Enjoy shooting & keep improving.
