I normally use multi segment or spot metering under tricky situations... One thing about the multi segment metering is that it gives priority to the focus point you select as the important exposure, so if you set to centre focus and half press the shutter, it locks the focus and exposure, and when you recompose, the exposure may be out for tricky situations. For multi segment hence, I select the focus point which is nearest to the subject, and the focus and exposure has been pretty accurate most of the time.

Grado,
You mentioned that "the multi segment metering is that it gives priority to the focus point you select as the important exposure".. I thought this is the case for "center weighted metering"..
So far, the photos with center weighted metering seem to have better exposure than multi segment.. for normal lighting condition.

Centre weighted metering gives higher priority to the centre general area, where as in multi segment mode, if I choose the focus point to be the top right corner, I half press the shutter, the focus and exposure would lock, giving the top right corner higher priority exposure compared to the rest of the scene... its important not to recompose the pic too much at this point, as the exposure may be out for high contrast scenes. Thats why I chose the focus point closest to the subject so that I dun have to recompose too much, hence the exposure has been pretty accurate that way...

Every one has different method of getting the exposure. Through experience you will find one that fits your style...
