Default Compatibility of 3500xi flash with 5D

Hi, anyone can advise if the older 3500xi flash is compatible with 5D?

Thought of buying it off from a friend.. or is it worthwhile paying more for the 3600HS which is about $260 +?

Thanks!

All flashes except the 5600, 3600 and 2500 are incompatible with the new DSLRs from KM.

Older Flashes from 18 years ago, like the 2800 to 5400HS can be used with the DSLR with limitation.

PROGRAM FLASH 3600HS(D), PROGRAM FLASH 5600HS(D), PROGRAM FLASH 2500(D), MACRO RING FLASH1200, MACRO TWIN FLASH2400 can be controlled automatically. For use of Macro ring flash, the macro flash controller which is sold separately is necessary.

For the other flashes than the above, HS, Xi, i series, are not controlled automatically.
The flash is set to fill-flash mode. ex. PROGRAM FLASH 5400HS / PROGRAM FLASH 5400Xi / PROGRAM FLASH 3500Xi / PROGRAM FLASH 2000Xi / PROGRAM FLASH 5200i / PROGRAM FLASH 2000i / PROGRAM FLASH 4000AF(*) / PROGRAM FLASH 2800AF(*)
* The flash shoe adapter FS-1100 is necessary for PROGRAM FLASH 4000AF and PROGRAM FLASH 2800AF

The DSLR performs automatic flash control by reflected-light of pre-flash light. Therefore only flash units corresponding to pre-flash function of this model are available for flash control. An incompatible Minolta Program flash/Minolta Maxxum flash unit always fires fully; it is necessary to set the flash in manual mode, and the camera in M mode to set the aperture according to the adequate object distance. Generally guide No. and aperture and object distance have the following relation and adequate exposure is obtainable:
