"Yu Lan, 26, a student from Nanyang Technological University, is one of them who thinks that her starting salary should be at least $4,000 as she has "strong analysis skills and trouble-shooting ability." - there is a slight hiccup... zero experience.

From what I observed...... at times it's not about asking to be paid to match the skills, it's about asking to be paid to match the ego and warped sense of self-worth/entitlement.

I wonder if she will still say the same thing if she cannot find one that pay that salary upon graduation.

It's not where you start. It's how high you can go.

Many Singaporeans who start at $880 are now making top dollars outstripping those who start at $4,000 because they work a lot harder.

You yourself is one such fine example.

See, she has that kind expectations because there were reports that say uni graduates command higher starting pay. if she is a poly grad, then she will think she is only worth $1000

It is not about what she could offer and how she is going to contribute to the company. We need to think without boxes.

Totally agreed! Looking at just starting salary is quite short term myopia, there's definitely many more other considerations in choosing a career path!

Way things are going probably going to need that kind of coin to get by especially if you are just now starting out in 2015. If I were a young Singaporean college grad I would shoot for the moon too. If I missed and still was after the dough I'd move to someplace less expensive and less competitive.

If you are the best at what you do you'll have the job and the ghitas. Work harder. Adapt and conform. Believe in yourself.

That's what Singapore is what it is today:

    Dare to Dream.

It's the raison d'etre of this nation without which we are just a little red dot.

This nation salutes the achievers like Yu Lan.

Experience you can learn. But over-confidence you can't.

Either you've got it at the beginning or will live through life being underpaid and unhappy.

why not? aim for the sky when supply is tight, and local grads are at a premium.
anyway, fresh grads always hear about the few lucky ones that earn big bucks, even double the $4k quoted.
usually, expectation and reality will take some time to reconcile.

We know little about their real capabilities and performance. In my professional career I have experienced fresh grads who were really good. Within short time they proved to be worth every EUR of their salary (which increases soon). The opposite is also true, nevertheless.

Only if you're her BF you'll know his expectation.

Otherwise it's behind their bedroom door.
