Only 3 months into 2015 and it seems like a disastrous year for SMRT already.

Sir, I believe this is entirely due to the public transport operators not being able to increase our fares sufficiently to hire a real Minister to run SMRT. Lol

He can get $8 bypass operation. That means he low maintenance? That means no need to increase fare to pay him?

As long as I get to see some spilling guts, $3 I pay. It's worth it!

Khaw Boon Wan: Cycling should not be just recreational. But a "viable transport" option.

He suggested we can cycle to the nearest MRT station.

So by that I assume we cycle to nearest MRT station, park our bikes there, then take the train. If MRT trains break down, no problem. No need to depend and queue for super crowded SBS buses. Can consider cycling from there to work! Healthy lifestyle.

    http://www.straitstimes.com/news/sin...-khaw-20141022

Or be like this top shot URA chief planner who cycles to work.

    http://news.asiaone.com/news/singapo...s-work-and-fun
    See what he says:

"If you're driving, you zoom past many places. Cycling is slower, so you see a lot more things."

"Cars are useful but you need not own one... The important thing from the planning point is to make non-motorised transport options as pleasant, friendly and convenient as driving."

So non need to own cars, guys! And don't fear if MRT trains breakdown.

(Disclaimer: I am only inferring from the articles rather than expressing my own views.)

When people drive cars, they make cars unaffordable so must take trains.

When people take trains, they don't work so now must cycle.

I wonder when is the time we crawl to work.....

I dun mind cycle or walk or crawl to work, provided I dun have to :

    1. Sent kid to school by 7am.
    2. Reach office by 8am.
    3. Shorter working hours.

Ideally my kid's school and office us just around my home.

Last week I board the train from Boon Lay to Bouna Vista at 10.30am on Tuesday. I'm utterly surprised by the overcrowding in the train similar to peak hour rush. It's not normal to have such large crowds, at that hour, back in the 90s.

I agree these breakdowns most likely due to over capacity since government increase population through migration policies in the last 10-15 years. But the Govt will deny this, but the rush to bulid more train networks and buying hundreds of new buses says otherwise.

In the meantime guys, those riding the train have to bear with it.

The electric scooters and bikes may work well for short distance travel (eg. ~10km each way)
Better than waiting for buses which are over crowded and no chance to go up bus after bus.
But there seems to be a lot of dragging of feet integrating such new forms of mobility/transportation and proper regulations for use.
Very poor 'feel of the ground' imo.

Cycling only works if one does not need to carry too much (eg. laptop) and has access to a shower.
I do it on alternate days, so I consider myself lucky.
Certainly beats waiting for the bus imo.

Building more MRT lines, I doubt it will work (again back to that 'poor feel of the ground')
The intent is to have the rush hr load distributed over more lines.
However, most ppl stay on the main 2 lines, plus the NE line.
Workplaces are also not too well distributed, so ppl tend to travel towards those few lines again.
Finally, travel time despite all the line jumping don't really save much time, so it does not encourage changing lines.

I don't give a shite if they came up with 20,000 alternative ways for people to get to work or to distract public attention from the issues. Providing reliable public transport is their obligation. Anything short = incompetence. Period.

Agree with this. Unless all these new lines also stop at the usual crowded stations (Tg Pagar, Raffles Place, Bishan etc.). Also LRTs are too slow and small. IMO should just have more feeder buses. I think all the new express/private buses that feed people directly from housing estates to workplaces are also good. You can pay more and take those if you don't want to squeeze on the trains/normal public buses.

    1) Get kids to study at home.
    2) Work from home if bosses allow.

All came about because some smart aleck contrived and came up with a magic number in some sort of a super White a.k.a. CCB Paper that would supposedly bring growth and wealth to Singapore and ever since then it's been nothing but bad law-making based on idealistic aspirations rather than using commonsense. As for his followers (henchmen), they are doing nothing but making dogmatic assertions to stifle discussion over a very serious issue......
