price varies on thread size.
hoya uv gives you yellowish cast, get a b+w.
if you can afford, nikon has filteres too, its the best so far but very ex.

Hiee...

I use..... UV for general protection - and also to cut general haze effect (to a certian level only). I basically use HoyaUV[coated] or Just plain Hoya or othe brands like TOKINA.

To me the filters gets critical for wide angles and the light gets into the lens in acute angles. As a Cokin Front slot in filter user for wide angles, i normally go bare - no UV filters.

I will go bare wihout filter for critical shoot where i feel neccesary.

Like for example, if using the Sigma 70-300 APO Amcro Super II ....i would recommedn to take the filter off if you taking sunset/sunrise. Else you will get reflected glows that are not wanted.

I don't use B+W for now but who knows in the future.

rgds,
sulhan

ok cos i read that a single coated uv filter allow only 90% of the light to went thru
whereas the multi-coated type allow 97%
thinking of getting the hoya hmc version
anybody bought it before? and what would be the reasonable price..

for 55mm HMC, TCW quote $20
AP quote $30, but can't remember it's HMC or super HMC.
Interested to get one for my 50mm lens also, as Sulhan mentioned normal UV filter (e.g. Hoya) do show reflected glows when I am taking with strong lighting source backgound at night.

For a 55mm filter , (the one u maybe looking for)..the single coated one is only $8-$10. The HMC(N) is about $25? Theres a PRO version too.

Depends on what u shoot mostly, normal using just get the UV(O). if ur shooting lots of portiats, get a skylight filter. And do get a Cir- pol filter too.

I bought the super thin SuperHMC UV filter for my Sigma 17-35mm lens. Thread size is 82mm.... I think it cost me $90 or something like that... for my case, the lens vignettes under certain lighting conditions if I use a filter of the regular thickness... I really cannot remember the price so dun quote me on that... I got it from either TCW or Alan.

For some unknown reasons, my experience with Hoya isn't so good. The filters somehow tend to leave "stain" marks when it is cleaned. I've much better luck with B+W filters - more tolerant to cleaning, more solidly build, but also more expensive. I would go with B+W MRC multicoated filters for prime lenses.

I agree with Sulhan that wide angle lens are best used without any filters.

The best UV filter I have was bought in Japan - MARUMI type MC-L370 Dynamic. In my opinion, it has better colourless coatings than B+W MRC. I think even this is now superceded by MC-L400 series with even sharper UV cut off at 400 um. I am sure these filter manufacturers make alot more money selling filters than lens makers

My first UV filter was a Marumi... sold to me by a salesman who obviously conned me... I paid $60 for a 62mm thread UV filter... that was when I got my first SLR, the 505si...

Oh for sure Marumi did have alot of crappy low end filters. But their top end stuff is very good.
In Japan, the Yodobashi Camera superstore carries all the filters supermarket style -- will surely freak out filter collectors. Everything is available including Lee filters, Kodak gelatins, etc. I spent quite a few hours checking them out that's when I picked up the Marumi MC-L370 - very Tak-kai nei!! I even manage to find hard to get Rollei 35 filters and hood!!... hee hee.

Funny that the Hoya brand isn't marketed in Japan. I think it is sold under Kenko brand in Japan.

Kenko = Hoya? Is that why the Hoya website has Kenko stuff?

Anyone bought filters for your 5D recently?
If so, what brand and $ and most importantly, does it
work well with the 5D.

Thanks!
