There are different types of 120 films for MF. Some are more suited for more specific purposes. Eg. portraits, landscape, etc. Can some experienced users here provide a brief list of the types/brands of film and what kind of shoot they are best recommeded for?

For Slides: Fuji Velvia for landscape, Fuji Provia for general purpose, Fuji Astia for portraits.
For B&W: Ilford HP5+ (at EI250) for general purpose, street. Fuji ACROS 100 (at EI100) for landscape. For Color Negative: Fuji NPH, Fuji Reala It's a pity that nobody sells Fuji ACROS 100 here. It's a wonderful film - very fine grain, creamy with Perceptol. Easy to develop with other chemicals also and not overly contrasty (aka T-max). I buy a bunch whenever I visited Tokyo in the past. I hope HP5+ is going to be around for a long time. It is really a bullet proof film - gives decent result with almost any developer. Agfa APX100 was also very good, but can't be found around here now. |

Personally, I use HP5 and Neopan 400 for general use, FP4 and Delta 3200 for specific lighting situations. They are not as fine as Tmax or Delta 100/400 but they are more forgiving of exposure mistakes.

FotoHub only sells Provia 120. Where can I find the Fuji Astia? Ruby ought to have right?

Landscape - Velvia 50 (Warm Tone, super saturation, use on cloudy days for maximum impact)
- Velvia 100F (Less saturated than Velvia 50, the only choice for velvia once the velvia 50 out of stock) - Provia 100F (Cool Tone, slightly blueish, use on bright sunny days, good for scenes with water and mountains) - Provia 400F (Cool tone, works fine pushed until ISO 1600, the only choice for indoor/night slide film) Potrait - Astia 100F (Very natural colors, the only choice for nice skin tones, very sharp grain, slightly brown yellowish) |
