Default Anyone Has a Home-made Softbox? Or Own something like this?

As I'm still beginning my journey as a newbie (first DSLR) and am trying to create good portrait shots, I read that it might be 'useful' to use a softbox for indoor portraits shoot.

Came across this thread at dpreview this morning (http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/re...ssage=14885191) and it seems like one good option though it might prove to me rather expensive at ard US$35 without shipping.

Does anyone know whether they carry something like this in the sg shops and also anyone has any success trying to duplicate this with off-the-shelf matrials? Or maybe other pointers to help achieve this effect with a 'hefty' US$35 purchase ?

I have tried using a white colour unmbrella and attach my slave flash to it with tape and mount it again with tape to a tripod. In this manner, I get side light which I feel is better than straight lighting. A camera mounted flash is pointed to the ceiling to get some fill-light. With dSLR, exposure is on manual.

Got pretty satisfactory results from this.
I love big car, big house, big lenses, but small apertures.

Remember that fitting the softbox on the flash reduces the light output around 1 f stop, so you'll have to compensate for this by opening the aperture a bit more or using a lower shutter speed.

    Yar rite...

The DIY softbox are really big.
If i make it smaller will it affect the picture ?

Another way to diffuse light use it when u forget or dont wan to make a diffuser

Cover the flash with a piece of tissue paper secure it with rubber band. May not look nice but better than a wash out photo. One layer is abt -1/3 step. Usually i fold it 4 layer to get abt -1 step.

Got my head down to make one...damn very lazy.. but was determined when started to get it done. just draw the layout on pen/paper, apply pythagorus theorem where necessary, use thin card board( those at the end of paper pad etc),+ masking tape, + aluminum foil + CD sleeve (those singular CD sleeve), real thin and just perfect size ~ 12 X 12 cm which i designed.

below are the shots of the the mini softbox, damn fragile...have to put in a box bigger than it to bring out i suppose? will try out some portraits tomorrow, took some shots of myself, turned out quite ok compared to naked flash, did not test with bounce card though.hmm...

also not sure if the aluminum helped in any way. light loss i'd say is max 1 stop... cld be only 1/3 or 2/3...
