Hi I was looking to purcahse a semipro DSLR camera. Was going to purchase a Nikon D70s, but at the last moment, my friend advised me to look at the Cannon D20.
Could you kind folks advise me on this advise? I do not have any lens (except for a old cannon manual SLR one), and a 1GB CF card. Needs are to take some amatuer photos. Seen on Comex advert - $2799 with freebies. Is it a good buy? Thanks. |

I'm not too sure about the cheapest price for 20D is i'm not a user of this fine camera. You like to state what kind of photography you are engaging in and the others may help you in your lens selection. Just a note though SLR/DSLR cameras are an almost neverending buying of equipment. You may need to factor at least 1 to 30 times of the camera price to fund purchases like lenses and computers etc. enjoy!

I don't know what freebies they are offering now but if that price comes with the kit lens and together with some freebies, why not? |

My apologies to all canon users!
Yes, it is the EOS 20D. It is $2969 with the kit lens, together with 1 GB card, 1 lens book. My needs are to try and take some decent photos, hopefully to emulate some of the marvelous photos you guys have take. I know the skill of the person behind the camera is of most importance, but I would like to buy a reasonable camera so that I wont outgrow it too quickly, and I need all the help the camera can give me! Mainly to take portraits, family shots, kids, night shots, scenery. Please advise. Many thanks Last edited by dnd8008; 1st September 2005 at 03:14 PM. |

Canon 20D will definitely suit your needs for taking portraits, family shots, kids, night shots, scenery. But you will have to at least invest in some lenses if you are not interested in the kit lens.

Local stores offer about 30% lower.
Someone posted a price on 20D, don;t know how reliable it is http://forums.clubsnap.org/showthread.php?t=149236 I suggest getting an equote from Cathay, MSColor and see what you get. Alternatively, go to these shops and ask. Compare with COMEX prices. Usually they'll at least match the pricing. |

I think it is best for you go to the shop to try out both cameras.
And see which one you like best. Both are fine cameras and will be able to meet your needs. |

Nikon D70s with kit lens ~ $1.7k As 20D is 1.7x the price of D70s, wouldn't it be logical to expect more from 20D??? ![]() |

Hi! First of all, welcome to the photography world.
Given the fact that you have just started to buy photography equipment seriously, I would suggest that you do a bit of homework prior to the purchase. First thing first, you are comparing the Nikon D70s vs Canon 20D - an entry level camera vs a semi-pro, so it's not a good comparsion. COMEX is selling the 20D with kit lens for $2,969, with FREE Battery Grip (BG-E3) + Lens Book. I believe that you can get better price at some of the store, like Alan Photo, MS Color or TK Photo, you don't have to buy at COMEX. If you ever need help to buy the body, do feel free to contact me, I can accompany you to buy if I am free on that day. Back to your comparison, based on features and functionalities of the 2, you have to decide for yourself which one suits your needs and budget. Major advantages of Canon 20D over D70s 1) Magnesium Alloy Body - for Outstanding Durability 2) 9 point AF - faster focusing 3) 8.2 Megapixel CMOS Sensor w/ DIGIC II Image Processor - high resolution for cropping 4) 5 fps - for capturing fast actions and sports 5) Batter Grip, BG-E3 - additional batteries, better hand holding 6) Mirror Lock-up via Custom function - minimise camera shake esp for Macro or Night photography Major advantages of D70s over 20D 1) Half the price of 20D 2) Solid 18-70mm kit lens 3) Flash X-sync speed of 1/500 4) 2" LCD monitor 5) Spot metering 6) Light weight 7) Focusing Screen - On-demand grid lines which helps in framing/composition |

how about 350D? 20D/350D vs D70s 8MP vs 6MP the biggest dislike CANON- strap holder will rust on u!! NIKON- funny color on LCD. anyway, most establish names are quite ok, its just a matter of personal preference. if D70s is good enough for u, don't waste the money on 20D. get a better lens. ![]() |

if money is an issue (well who are we kidding, its an issue for everyone)
why not get a 2nd hand 300d or 10d ?? you can save on the body and spend more on lens which would help you to get nicer photos imo. plus the depreciation is much less and you can upgrade to a 20d later and still keep your lens purchases if you are just started out, the 300d would be just nice imo, thats how i started out as well and have spend perhaps double the amount on lens already and am ready to upgrade to a 2nd hand 20d by the end of this year when the 20d users upgrade to the 5d . ![]() |

The grip is package with EOS 350D, NOT with the EOS 20D. ~You are right E-3 is for the 350D and E-2 for the 20D. The person you quoted see salah. The ad itself quite misleading. Last edited by TechMage; 1st September 2005 at 05:47 PM. |

Allow me to clear up the air.
Some say bundling with of the BG-E3 Battery Grip. Well, that's for Canon EOS 350D Kit. As for the Canon EOS 20D, just body alone will set you back $2,799 while the Kit will set you back $2,969. Now, as for the free gift, they are: 1) Photographer's Vest 2) 2x 1GB CF Card 3) Vacuum Anti-Moisture Dry-Box 4) Lens Workbook This information is taken from the flyer from the Comex 2005 which in front of me ![]() |
