recording data and starting up times are slow, not withstanding the slowest and fastest card imo. My rubber grip is starting to come off...

the great part of this camera, almost everything else. the price now is all time low, 6mp is great my applications like food and stills. Its my backup camera, i own it for 2 years and it will continue to be in my stable until i fund another pro camera. The colours are great, quite user friendly. Rather reliable body.

may i know how long is the startup time??is is suitable to be used to shoot fast moving things like cars and planes...because that would be my main purpose for the cam...

What is your intended use?

Fast actions, you might be better off with 20D.

Anything else it's good enuf.

start up time about 3 sec.

The prob with writing time is that the shutter released have to be "unpressed" before it can write to CF.

Cars and planes, shouldn't be any prob. There are a few I know who use 10D to shoot fast birds in flight.

I also considered the 20D but it is not within my budget of below $1400.Now looking at the D70s or the 10D....presently, the 10D has the upper hand....coz i also like the L-lens of cannon....If I were to leave the camera on, will it drain a lot of battery power??....i mean just leaving it on without shooting...

its about 2 or 4 seconds, i know its long, since it does not consume batteries very much you can leave it long for a day's shoot.

shooting cars and planes is more on techinque, cameras only have in a certain extend. In the olden days when cameras are manual ppl are still able to shoot planes and cars, the framerate is to help you increase your chances, but if you are slow, even 8 frames will not help. I know, i bought the 1D cos it got higher framerate but at the end i found out if you can predict your action then 1 frame is enough.

Still its not a sports camera, its focusses fast but not pro cameras rate. You may want to look at a used 1D you aid you better in your work.

It's not unusual. Depending whether you know how to take care of your equipment.

If you ask a PRO, he / she will tell you - what's the problem with rubber grip and so forth coming up, etc; equipment are meant to be used, not for displaying, etc.

besides all the high end DSLR....canon 10D is a work horse in the pro-entry level. i have one for almost 2 years for my job. one to one compare with others DSLR within the same level may not be the best camera in terms of start-up time, colours....etc but i know this camera is just like the former nikon F90X.......stable and tough. just my view after using one for so long. as for wear and tear.....as what USM said....equipment is meant to use...not display.

let me use one pro words, not mine: most of us will never ever Fully Utilize this camera, so unless you are too pro for it, then it will be most useful to you.

i am glad to say, all my sports shots have been done with the 10D, using all Canon glass. Samples in link below.

Edit: Minus underwater shots, those are taken with Olympus C4040

It is fast enough for most applications except really fast sports and extreme low light situations. It is probably the greatest value for money rite now, if you obtain a mint 2nd hand set, since the prices are dropping so low.

Summarize the key good points of 10D,
  • Solid build, compared to 300D. Very sturdy.
  • Excellent viewfinder, even thought its much smaller than that for 1.3x or full frame cam. Not as 'grainy' as that on 20D
  • Good ergonomics design, with deep and comfortable handgrip, with finger 'groove'
  • Moderately fast AF, good enough for general shooting in moderate to good lightings.
  • Picture quality is very good, esp in RAW mode, very clean output and low noise files from ISO 100 to ISO 400.

The key bad points (every camera has some, so just live with it and accept it)
  • Slow startup time of 3 secs, the D70 and 20D win in this respect. This is the most critical design flaw of 10D I feel.
  • Slow writing speed, especially when shooting in RAW.
  • Camera does not write to CF when shutter is half depressed, after taking shot(s)
  • Small buffer (only 9 shots), not good for action/burst sequence shots
  • Focus tends to 'hunt' in very low light levels

All in all, the good points outweigh the bad, its still a great semi-pro body for the price u are paying now.

2 cts from a current 10D owner. And yes, I'll still be keeping it as a backup even if I do upgrade.

its also my digital street camera, very quiet and discreet shutter. i just pop my 35mm and i'm ready to shoot. robust build, nice round shape, good weight, good size.

FYI 1D also hunts in low light, depends on the lens used as well.

10D viewfinder is hard for manual focusing but not impossible.

I still have mine somewhere in the dry cabinet, can't seem to bring myself to get rid of it.

Still a good cam, sound AF system, accurate metering, reasonable write/read speeds for a DSLR of its age. Good build quality, plenty of accessories available, great Canon L lenses and above all, really affordable now.

Battery life is quite normal for a cam its age, best to get 3 or 4 spare batts. Each lasts an average of 300-400 frames with some use of the LCD for review.
