Had the chance to visit the Canon Service Centre in Osaka and try out the 5D and the new 24-105L F4 there. Pls note that I am a Nikon user and has little experience with Canon cameras prior to this. As hard as I tried to persuade the pretty ladies there, no pictures allowed as they are demo sets only.
5D: First impression is wow, VF is super bright and large compared to the other cameras that I have seen, D2x D2h, 1D MKII etc etc. User control menus is pretty user friendly with only 1 page divided into sections according to the functions. Shutter lag doesnt seem that bad but is slightly slower than a D70. LCD is big at 2.5 inches. Nice and sharp but then when you zoom in to the max, resolution seem to be quite bad. 24-105L: Extending barrel. Zoom ring is smooth and not too loose or tight. AF speed on the 5D body is fast, should be on par with the the tamron 28-75. Seems to be sharp but then i cant confirm it through the 5D LCD. 77mm front. Feels solid but not as solid as the 70-200L, still got a bit plasticky feel to it. Some impt figures: Release in JP is mid Oct 5D Canon RRP 400k Yen ~ 6k SGD Store ~ 4.9k SGD 24-105L RRP 14k Yen ~ 2k SGD Store ~ 1.7k SGD

too bad 24-105 barrel will extend, but at least this really clear all our doubts how is the mirror slap of the 5D? how about writing and playback speed? with such large buffer, writing may not be a great concern...but wonder if zooming or browsing 12.8MP photo is smooth?

Mirror slap is noticeable but not strong. Write and playback is fast, dunno what card they use as they taped up the CF slot. Got a slight lag but not a hinder. But when zoomed to the max, the pic came out blur. even when the shot is taken at 1/160. Well handheld, but I am pretty sure that I was steady. Used the ladies` head as monpod.

it's not that bad.. it's <50% compared to the 1Ds MK2.. a rather 'affordable' FF.. I expect the trend to follow and prices to keep falling

Something like 10D style playback.
It looked quite sharp thru the VF, also when blown up like 70% in the LCD but once it max zoom it. the pic cant make it liao. I am suspecting that the LCD can blow it up to like 200% thus all the pixelation. and blurness.

Thanks for posting this info! I expect that Canon is stuffing the channels right now.
The Canon 10D release was a disaster! They missed the entire Xmas season. Canon got it right with the 20D... in the stores by late September. I expect the the 5D release to be even smoother. I'll bet they are working overtime in Oita. Robert |

Hmm at 1.7k street price the 24-105L seems rather *Ugh* when compared to the ~2k 24-70L. Against the ~1.2k 28-70L it isn't really a contest. Personally I'd rather pay 300 more for a stop.

"Mirror slap is noticeable but not strong"
How is the mirror slap (vibration and loudness) compared to your D70? |

Hi
5D for $5k or less? count me in..... finally, a (relatively) COMPACT full frame DSLR! The 1Ds MKII was a beast, and unlike the 1v film counterpart, you can't disengage that vertical grip for instances when one wants to go light.... as nice as it was, it is simply not the right camera for discreet, unobstrusive photography..... The use of BP511A for the 5D imho is also worth the price. Compact, less complicated, full frame DSLR. Wow..... I have waited a looooong long time for this one ![]() |

Only the lens price is confirmed by the store. They have not yet decided on how much to release as the street price but that should be the ball park figure.

wah... TMC. a lot of canon users in s'pore going to be flooding ur PM today! hmmm... LCD progressive as 10D? which means you have to wait for a while for the pic to be displayed fully? hmmm... dat was a major bugbear for 10D users last time. kinda weird if canon engineers bring it back for 5D, rite?77mm filter? good news for all those who own the 17-40 and 70-200/2.8. can share filters!
