I did a comparision of the new 18-70mm and the old 24-85mm lenses.
Here is the scene being compared. ![]() Comparision at F5.6 Left corner with 18-70 ![]() Left Corner with 24-85 ![]() At F8 Left Corner with 18-70 ![]() Left Corner with 24-85 ![]() Conclusion : 24-85 is sharper at 5.6, at f8 they are equal. Actually I found the 18-70 to be sharper by a hairline in some parts of the picture at f8. The 18-70 images are more red than the 24-85's and the 50mm's.Do the 24-85 and 50mm produce less red images to compensate for the red cast inherent in film pics? Based on your pics, I think the 18-70 is actually sharper at f/8 while it is noticeably softer at f/5.6...

Yes the focal point is on the building, but at this distance the left corners should be in focus ( http://www.dofmaster.com/dofjs.html 75mm focal length, 250M dist ). So the blurness at the edges should be the same if the lenses are equally made.
Here's the same shot at f5.6 taken with the 50/1.7. All the pics were converted from RAW, no sharpening applied. ![]() For the f5.6 shots, both shutter speeds are 1/100 but the iso for the 18-70 is 250 and the iso for the 24-85 is 200. So the 18-70 should be slightly brighter, guess the light level must have fallen from when the 24-85 pic was taken at 6.35pm and the 18-70 at 6.36pm For the f8 comparison all settings are the same, 1/100 and iso 400. Great test for those who doubt the 18-70's performance!

In 7D, we have a handy AF/MF button and also DMF when set the front-bottom knob to auto. not sure about 5D. but i think 5D should have DMF, even my A1 also have. |

There is DMF mode on D5 but you can only manual focus the lens once the autofocus is locked.

What so difficult about pressing a button that toggles the camera between auto and manual focus? Frankly I rather disengage the motor from the lens cos there is less wear and tear on the gear system. Also if u really need to manual focus while auto focussing, I wonder if it would be better to go full manual focus anyway...
