Thread: Performance of NIKON 24-120mm F4

Default Performance of NIKON 24-120mm F4

Currently using a Nikon 35-70mm F2.8 for mid-range shoots. Though a very sharp lens that can focus very fast, I find the focal length rather restrictive if I were to use it as a walkabout lens, especially during overseas. Am contemplating getting the 24-120mm F4. However, many conflicting reviews found. Either you hate it or love it. Can any users share their real life experience using this lens? Thanks.

Very sharp, with VR & zooms from 24mm to 120mm. Limited by f/4, focus speed, weight heavy & bulk.

I have one & traveled a lot with it. From hot steamy provinces in the Philippines to cold winter in Minnesota. It never gave any problems, I even used it outside under during a snow fall. Focus accuracy & speed is good even in low low light conditions. VR is especially useful for shots in dim places like restaurants & churches.

    The 24-120mm f/4 goes together with the 70-200mm f/4 when I travel.

If you want some samples I will go dredge some up.

I tend to trust the reviews from these guys more.

You can also consider the 24-85 VR

Yes, if it is no trouble for you, please do share some shots from your set-up. Is yours on FX? I understand this lens performs better on DX due to its sweet spot in the centre. Thanks.

Mod, thanks for the link. The 24-85 seems too short too. Any other good lenses which are close to the focal length of the 24-120? Thanks.

I shoot it mostly on FX, it's quite unwieldy on a DX body. Tried it on the Mrs D5100, she didn't like the bulk & weight. It's too front heavy.

Heard lots about the Sigma 24-105 mm f/4 ART but I personally never tried it. It's performance is on par or better & cheaper to boot.

There are a lot of new 24-120mm f/4 kit lens from the D750 on sale now. Quite affordable too. I bought mine used on CS some years back.
