Hi y'all..
Thank you all! I've had many many enquiries of the listing of Photography Assistants. However, we're not looking so much for freelance photographers per se, but more to being a Professional Photographers' Assistant. This usually cover areas such as setup of (studio-type) lighting, loading of film-backs (35mm-8x10), handling polaroids, carry excessive (but vital) photographic equipment, gawking at gorgeous models (well sometimes at least ), liasing with clients, blah blah blah. For the more experience few, you'll know that this is only the tip of the iceberg. I've got various photographers (both local and foriegn) who sometime book equipment, studios and stuff for rent. They usually require photographic assistants for hire. And that's basically what we're hunting for. Looking to give assistants a place where they can showcase their services for hire. Most assignments are on ad-hoc basis, so we'll contact the Assistants for their schedules. Well, now that that's pretty much covered. I hope to see your emails once again! *cheers guys* Sincerely, Kevin Chris. Ou |

What's the basic knowledge an assistant got to have?
(eg. do not have basic lighting techniques knowledge, means not qualified?) ![]()

Hi there...
Well, I wouldn't say that at all. With Assistants, I suppose experince is a key factor. I've read an interview with a top commercial Photographer based in NYC. Basically, there are 2 types of Assistants. The first type knows little, but is still in the progress of learning. But he/she can read the photographer's style and can help assist the photographer is matters, even before the assistant is asked to. Tons of initiative and very enthusiastic to learn. Good spirit and even better attitude. The second type knows all about photography (lighting setups, metering, etc..) But does not have initiative. Waits for the photographer to tell him/her what to do, before it is carried out. Believes he/she knows everything. It's not to say which style is better. It really depends on the personality of the individual photographers. Some prefer pro-active, and some muted assistants. So there's basically no such thing as a bad assistant, but simply just a bad attitude. But in terms of basic knowledge... hmmm.. Able to set up lights on light stands..... Load 35mm to 120 film backs... Basic Knowledge or Concept of metering.... Eye to look out for details a busy photographer might miss out... warm polaroids....tether a digital back to a powerbook....able to carry heavy loads... Sorry to ask here, i got problems accessing my email. Hope you dun mind.
Apart from all that, what are the working hours like? Issit like odd hours? or a number of hours per day or few days? Lots of o.t that probably won't get paid? (apart from learning invaluable experience)

Yups agreed!
Most Assistants are photgraphers-in-the making. Many of them don't mind doing O.T work, if it means that they'll learn something and pick it up for later use. This is the sort of experience Assistants thrive for. I know a couple of Assistant friends in the L.A and NYC, who have been assisting for over 8-10 years. Occasionally, they land their own shoots for big-time editorials, but are essestially still in the stage of learning. I bet with all the knowledge gained, they're gonna break out and make it one day as well. Roti> I'm sure that you truly understand where I'm coming from. SBS99> Well, the working hours are whatever the shoots hours are (freelance assistants). Sometimes extending into the wee-hours of the morning, and sometimes it takes mere hours to complete a shoot. But full-time assistants, learn much much more. Lotsa business skills, studio management, life, clients, etc... |

Hi guys..
Thanks for all the emails. Had long-time assistants to newbies contacting me. Once again, thank you for such spirit and enthusiasm. However, I do regret to inform you guys, that we're only looking for the mid-range to the experienced ones. But we'll still keep all the contacts (you'll never know what might pop up). Any pro photographers looking to train a new assistant can also contact me, have tons of contacts sent to me. Don't worry, no charges. Am looking to help them out. We're still keeping a lookout for freelance assistants. So if you're still intersted, do drop us a line or an email. *cheers* ![]() |

Hi..
Well... for me, since I've started this rental scheme, I've started to use assistants with little assisting knowledge for my smaller shoots. Most times, my full-time assistant will be there giving tips and helping out. I'm doing what I can to help. But a greater source of knowledge comes from working fulltime, and gaining as much info as possible from the photographers. |

Yups! I've got friends in the US that have been assisting for bout 3-4years. Pay is pretty bad, but stuff learn is priceless. Guess its all about paying your dues?
Most of them learn organisational to production knowledge. And are engaged on a full time basis. Average rates are about SGD$1300 / mth. (+ allowances). It really all depends on the field of photography (fashion vs industrial, etc...) |
