When I was one of the shops in Pensular Plaza, the salesman actually asked me to get the Tokina over Hoya, since the glass Hoya use is made by Tokina...hence the glass used is essentially the same, and they go thru almost the same production process.

I think you got it the wrong way. Hoya is one of the largest (if not the largest) producers of optical glass in the world, and Tokina as well as many other companies almost certainly buy from them.

    Default Hoya made in Phillippines

Recently, I have come to noticed that some Hoya filters are made in Phillippines, especially the UV. I can suspect that it's to reduce cost.

Anyone knows if the quality is also reduced?

    Are they single-coated?

Are they still coated on both sides (like they were when made in Japan)?

Don't tell me about HMC series because it's obvious. I only want to know about the non-HMC series.

nope. I don't think I got it wrong....that's what the salesman told me, and...the box of my 77mm hoya HMC UV filter definitely has the words "Made by Tokina Co LTD" on it

hoya produces the glass raw material.
    tokina makes the filter.
tokina is not glass manufacturer. a Former Nikon Engineer left Nikon and set up Tokina to make lenses.
nowadays when people say "made by xxx yyy" it may mean they put the oem product into their paper box.
or glass filter blanks sent by hoya to tokina and tokina puts them into the filter metal rings.

open up your PC and there are parts from malaysia, philippines, china, mexico.......and the computer box says " made in Taiwan"

at least one old Leica lens made by Mamiya.
another old Leica lens made by (I think) Kyocera.
many NEW German sounding brand name RF lenses made by Cosina. watch out!
Cosina is fine with me. But please call it a Cosina lens.

Tokina may assemble the pieces, but the glass is almost certainly made by Hoya. I'm not aware that Tokina has the capability of making optical glass on their own. I wouldn't be surprised if most of the big names get their glass from Hoya and/or Schott. (Minolta traditionally makes or at least made its own glass.)

I think THK is only a shared distributor.
