Cool Any lens protection advices?

Hi guys,

For C720Z,

I know that there is CLA-4 55mm + step-up ring + 55mm UV Filter for lens protection. However, C720Z is 8X zoom power. I believe it will have big problem like vignetting and so on. Am I right? or is there any way to amour this camera?

I don't quite get you. Vignetting usually occurs with wide angles and in any case, a step up ring will reduce the chances of that. And what do you mean by armouring the camera??

I read from this website: http://www.cliffshade.com/dpfwiw/c-2...nses/index.htm regarding the vignetting problem.

Vignetting occurs due to the unwelcome dark peripheral circular masking seen when attachment hardware (filter rings, step-up rings, lens barrels, etc.) shows up in the periphery of the captured image.

For 8x zoom, the lens adaptor must be longer enough for the max. zoom. What if you would like to take only 2x zoom photos? your lens adaptor is not going to reduce the length anyway and this will occur vignetting problem.

"amour" is typing error...it should be "armouring"...

Ahhh........ ok ok. I've got a better idea now.

Ok. First, is the CLA-4 an accessory dedicated to the C720Z? If it is, then there shouldn't be any course for any vignetting as manufacturers will take that into consideration when designing the accessories.

You mentioned CLA-4 55mm. I assume that it has a filter thread of 55mm. Then in that case, you don't need a step-up ring at all. Step up rings are only used when you have a filter of a larger thread.

As for the zoom, I haven't seen a manufacturer make an lens adaptor that doesn't cover the entire length of the lens. It just doesn't make sense. The main function of a lens adaptor is to provide you with the possibility of putting a filter of other lenses in front of the existing lens.

As for armouring, what are you really expecting? A lens adaptor with a UV filter attached should be more than sufficient for most people.

I might have missed something here or not fully understand your question.

mrdogbear,

The CLA-4 should work fine with the C-720UZ without any vignetting problems, and without the need for a step-up ring if you are going to use it with 55mm filters. The only known problem of the CLA-4 is that it might obstruct the built-in flash when you stack up filters. Many C-700/720UZ users would recommend getting the OEM 52mm adapter which "hasn't got" this problem.

I'm using the 52mm adapter myself, and has been pleased with it. Only problem is you'd still get some shadow cast when you use the built-in flash on close-up shots. This problem is common in compact cameras where the built-in flash is positioned close to the lens. Other shots are fine.

Both the CLA-4 and the OEM 52mm adapter are long enough for the retractable 8x zoom lens to extend to the fullest length, and is just long enough to prevent vignetting in wide-angle shots.

You shouldn't have much problem getting them. When in doubt of compatibility issues, bring your camera down to test them out before buying.
