Default How to read blood pressure?

    Hello dear Kopitiamers,

Thinking of getting one of those portable electronic Citizen blood pressure meters.

However, I have no idea how to make out the readings. What is dystolic, systolic, and how do you know if a reading is high or low for a particular person?

Anyone here got experience with reading blood pressure?

i forgot the 2 terms... heheh basically i remember this way.. the larger number is called upper reading and smaller number is called lower reading.... for normal person the perfect BP should be 120/80. the upper reading is the pressure of blood leaving your brain and the lower reading is pressure of the blood entering your brain.... Also to get the best reading rest 15 mins until you are fully relexed then measure your blood pressure....

    What Is High Blood Pressure?

Blood pressure is the force in the arteries when the heart beats (systolic pressure) and when the heart is at rest (diastolic pressure)

I didn't know one have to strap around your head to measure this
Systolic is the pressure when you heart is contracting (full pump) while dystolic is when your heart is relaxed (no contraction). That's why systolic is always the higher number. If you have high dystolic you might have more serious problem i.e. without your heart pumping blood your pressure is already high.

If I understand correctly, those pressure meters for around your wrist are not accurate, better get those that measure your upper arm, as it is closer to your heart, giving more accurate readings........

    120/80..
like what ob1canob said dystolic (the lower number is more important)
80 is slightly on the higher side already.. 70+ (around 75) is more ideal
    >83-5 is on the verge of HBP..
    >85 is mild HBP..
    >100 seek medical attention immediately.

my last BP was 110.. almost fainted.. now have to learn to take life easy to keep the BP down..

totally agree with Hong Sien. Try to get one that read from your arm. It's more accurate. Also check if they allow replacement of either cuff or pump. On taking blood pressure, try to use the same arm during measurement. there seem to be some difference (at least for me). Try to take measurement during the same period of the day and not after exercise as it would not be accurate.

and lastly, if diastolic is > 90 please go see a doctor.
