Like what Uncle Catchlights explained, we have our reasons for not doing so. There are those who are socially responsible and will not drag a whole group to the location. But there are also those that go there and drag their whole group along, if you follow certain groups in facebook.

Some of these places are HDBs and residential areas and while they may be good locations to shoot at, residents' opinion on the matter may differ.

And not sharing doesn't mean that we're selfish, but rather we believe that you're not socially responsible enough not to disturb the public.
Kei,just for some discussion purpose and hope that it can be constructive
As mentioned that i don't always shoot landscapes but rather more on birds for the moment so iam actually using my own experiences to share here. Not sure if there is any degree in differences between them?
I do agree to share with those who are responsible and reasonable.
But how do we know if the person is responsible or not? Personally if the location is for public access,I will share and remind them on the things to take note. If i ever knew they aren't being responsible,I will think twice in future if i wanted to share with them or not,and not assuming everybody is irresponsible and not share which I think is pretty unfair. Sometimes it takes some courage to ask being feared getting rejected or scolded, yes i kena scolded before..lol

Iam not sure if u have ever asked others on where some of their photos are being shot at?
When u found a nice location do u post it in any group or your own FB to share or just keep it personally and share with close friends only?
Did anyone asked u before on the locations?

    Thank you

If you take landscape then you will understand why some photographers do not share the location, birds fly but landscape do not. I do not know what you will feel when you are taking that beautiful long exposure sunset photo, when there are many other people walking and running around your camera with very expensive filters? I post many landscape photo which taken in public area only.
    Canon 5D II, 20-35 f/2.8L, 28-80 f/2.8L, 70-200 f/4L IS, 100-300 f/5.6L, 100 f/2.8 Macro

I had considered your point that birds may fly and i know landscapes don't.
But then there are some birds that will stay for a period of time aka "bao jiak"(confirm can shoot, after all its still not 100% because we can't control the birds) in our terms and some species that are known to be "one day" bird.
for both types we do share..as we know that we don't know when we will be able to get the "one day" bird again so its like helping one another or a meet up to shoot and chat session. sometimes we may be too late and missed the bird, but we still stay around chatting and asked if there are any other "lobang" to share and shoot. I feel that it is more fun this way.

as for your long exposures i can understand that because it happened to me before, but it was passer-by,I thought photographers should be more understanding so as not to walk around or in front of the cameras. but then i can understand there are always a few bad eggs in every community

As both a landscape and bird photographer, i can tell you we actually guard bird locations more religiously than landscape locations. Especially nesting sites. We do share, but only among friends we know we can trust.

And seriously, what secret location can you find in singapore? A quick look in google and you can figure out almost every location.

And to TS. An open roof that has no security is a liability lawsuit waiting to happen. There are no such places... unless you own the building

Firstly, don't tell me that you don't even know the characters of your own friends? and also, if it's a stranger, do you think you'd divulge what you know? if you do divulge what you know just to about anyone, then i'll find that you're someone who cannot be trusted to keep a secret. and this is an assumption based on how you've phrased it.

Secondly, no where did i say that i assume everyone is irresponsible and i won't breathe a word about it. perhaps it's just your poor sentence structure (or command of the English language), but i'm also forced to make an assumption here that you're inferring that i'm viewing everyone as socially irresponsible.

and your last sentence is extremely odd. you're just rehashing what I've kept saying: I only share with people i think are responsible and that's it. you don't need to know where i share it. i definitely won't share it on public spaces or groups on social media. that'll defeat the purpose of me trying to be more socially responsible.

OH AND. one last thing: read up on the destructiveness of opening up locations and places to tourism. most of the time, without proper control these places just end up getting their identity destroyed, or the inhabitants get irritated until they cannot take it any longer. it's the same with telling someone the best spot.

like i've mentioned, most of these high-rise locations are residential buildings, or secured offices that somehow some photographers managed to get access to. by revealing these locations, we might inadvertently spoil it for the residents, or might invite more public scrutiny to where we shoot when it comes to "gaining access" to certain areas (and therefore security might be stepped up to prevent shooting in those areas)

if i've not made it clear enough for you with that last sentence, then i don't know how to make it even more clear.

Iam not sure why u seem offended as I mentioned to have an open discussion and be constructive. From all your postings here, I can already tell that u don't share not because u wanted to be responsible. And I can tell u yes I do share even if someone whom I had never met before and this doesn't mean I can't be trusted. I have friends who told me not to share and I respect it and didn't share as I had mentioned I share whenever possible unlike I know some who don't share whenever possible. And also your reply to someone who is new to this forum I shall be direct to u and say it seems to give newbie a bad impression that members in this forum is like "when u found a place just keep quiet and don't share with anyone." I don't know how would u feel if u were a newbie seeking help here. There are a few members here who had PM me on locations and I do share(I have never met before),like wise one of the moderators here is also very friendly to share with me when I PM him...even a rare bird that he had spotted giving me very detailed descriptions on the location..I have never met him before by the way. Let's end this topic here as I thought it would come to something that benefits everybody.

Relax la everyone. I am sure both of you are responsible folks. It is not hard to guage who you can share locations with from interactions in ClubSNAP even if you have never met them before.

Maybe the approach is different for each one of you. But that is life, everyone is different. But sit down and have kopi, i am sure you both will make good friends and photo kakis. Especially when i know both of you through our interactions. Hey i never met either one of you in person too...

Yes everyone is different that's why I hope to have an open discussion to learn more because I get scolded before for sharing and not sharing..lol..I know it's impossible to make everyone happy just hope to improve..but I find that I made more friends through sharing,be it who share. That makes photography more fun IMO. My friend told me if u don't like to share then don't ask people also...I have seen people like this don't share but want to ask people.
