flash photography by using SB600

Hi friends...
I tried to take some pics by usng SB600 and D70s inside my house. I could able to take only in P mode without reducing shutterspeed more than 15.In all other mode shutter is showing only1 or 5 .that's all.Normally I like to shoot outside by usng M mode.
So I bit scared if i attend any indoor programmes i may not be able to shoot in any other mode except P. in the meter it's showing all underdeveloped. Hw to overcome this issue? Any one can advice me especially got experience in flash photography?
Even i tried to adjust ISO still same.

ever tried exposure compensation? also its dependent on where you meter.

it's a fairly simple logic.
flash exposure is dependent largely on aperture and flash settings
ambient lightings and motions (if desireable) are on Shutter.

do ya some reading on flash photography and experiment first
Nikon speedlight shld have TTL on flash to work even if ya had ya camera @ manual exposure.
it all runs from the aperture

:watch the flash synch speed as well
