    Hi Catchlights

No I mean the knurled threads where our fingers grab to turn the manual lens.

If it's on the rubber, remove it and have a good wash with soap and water.

Focus ring? Try using a soft toothbrush. If there's a lot of dirt, try to loosen it by wiping with lightly moistened cotton buds first.

These two links suggest some sort of optical cleaner, but there's no reason regular water shouldn't work too. Just use very very very very very little, a drop or two, obviously don't use enough for it to run.

I use slightly moistened cotton buds to remove them, and always wipe them dry straight after removing the dirt.

I use lighter fluid to moisten the soft brush a bit.

Lighter fluid on cotton bud or alcohol swab on a stick .... no need to worry about liquid taking too long to evaporate once the cotton bud leaves the rim thread
    A good photo's 45% you, 45% practice & 10% equipment. A bad photo share the same ratio.

some old manual lenses do not have rubber ring, fully metal body, so just use a used tooth brush to clean the knurled threads.
