Depends on the kind of pic you shoot.
Nikon 60mm macro is good and cheap.
If you take bugs than the 105mm is OK, 200mm better.
3rd party can use Tamron 90mm or 180mm.

Nikkor AF 105/2.8 Micro about $1k, the Tamron 90/2.8 is about 2/3 of the price.

Filters are OK but quality not as good (especially the corners) unless you are using the like of Canon 500D with the correct lens, maybe it is acceptable. You can also consider extension tube or reverse lens.

What's the budget? I always find the Nikkor 105mm Micro a good lens, its sharp wide open. Forget the 60mm micro, you dun have enough working distant and you are better off with an extended 50mm. Play around with the extended 50mm and buy the 105 micro when you decide to take the plunge.

There are extension tubes available in the market that allow you to mount between the lens and the body. Effectively this will decrease the distance between your subject and the camera allowing you to take a close up pix. Down side is that you will lose focusing to infinity which doesn't really matter.

extension tubes don't increase the working distance.... it gives you greater magnification by decreasing the minimum focussing distance....

Got the idea of the extension tubes and tried it in CP this evening. Not really like it. $200 for 3 glassless tubes... Decided to go for Nikon 105mm micro.
