[September.2014] Just prior to Photokina, Fujifilm had already announced their X30, X100T, and X-T1 Graphite Silver Edition. In terms of lenses, they added 2 more to their lens lineup with the announcement of their XF50-140mm F2.8R LM OIS WR and the XF56mm F1.2R APD. I was personally most interested in the XF50-140mm F2.8R LM OIS WR, as well as the upcoming XF16-55mm F2.8... but let me leave the lenses to later...

    Recommended Retail Prices
    X30 - S$899
    X100T - S$1,899 (available in early Nov'14)
    X-T1GS - S$2,199 (body only, available in early Nov'14)
    XF50-140mm F2.8R LM OIS WR - S$2,399 (available in Nov'14)
    XF56mm F1.2R APD - S$2,199 (available in Nov'14)

Much of the excitement over the new camera bodies has the introduction of the "Classic Chrome", introduced into these 3 new Fujifilm cameras - X30, X100T, and X-T1GS.

The "Classic Chrome" film simulation is suppose to be excellent for street and reportage photography, with deeper shadows, lower saturation, and a different colour hue from traditional film simulation modes.

Here are couple of links to sample images using the "Classic Chrome".

X30 also came with a new 2/3-inch X-Trans CMOS II sensor (12 megapixel with no optical low pass filter) together with the EXR Processor II, a new 100% 2.36M-dot organic EL electronic viewfinder, and longer battery life - courtesy of the switch to the NP-95.

X100T, aside from refinements in the body, Fujifilm introduced a new hybrid viewfinder system, having refined the layout of the shooting information around the VF, as well as introducing the small electronic view at the bottom of the VF.

The X100T and the XT1GS also have been enhanced with an electronic shutter, capable of quiet triggers up to 1/32000 sec!! The finishing of the X-T1GS is solid the the graphic silver surface... and the D-pad buttons are much improved over the initial X-T1.

... I personally prefer the hammer tone feel of the X-T1. But I would really love to have the "Classic Chrome" film simulation as well... well, now I can have my cake and eat it!! X-T1 users, do not fret over the the GS edition having all these cool additional stuff, Fujifilm have said that they will provide some of these new features through a firmware update, which should be available in Dec'14!!

Well, that was all the good news I needed to hear from Fujifilm... but that wasn't all, as we still haven't touched on the lenses yet!

XF50-140mm F2.8R LM OIS WR - this has been a one of the XF lenses that I have been wait for from Fujifilm, and I'm sure I'm not the only one. It's not exactly a small lens, constant 2.8 aperture, zoom range from 75-210mm (in 35mm equivalent), with OIS, and it weighs a hair under 1kg. But consider this together with the X-T1, the bundle will still be a fraction of the weight of my EF 70-200mm F2.8L IS w/ 5Dmkii.

The sets at Photokina were prototype models, and so we were asked not to save any of the images taken with the lenses there. But from the 2-3mins I spent with the prototype model, the AF was already very fast and accurate, and the images from it, sharp! Attached below is some of the other information provided by Fujifilm on the MTF charts and design of the lens.

A little correction... Missing a Zero, should be 1/32000 right?

The XF56mm F1.2R APD is a variant of the slightly older XF56mm F1.2R, which was actually just launched at the CES earlier this year. So what's with the new variant? They both provide a focal length equivalent to 85mm on the APS-C size sensors, but the inclusion of the apodization filter in the APD version is essentially an internal radial gradient filter designed to "dull out" the edges of the circle of confusion in the out-of-focus areas. The results are smoother rendering of the bokeh, making this an even more ideal portrait lens then before.

I honestly didn't find the bokeh of the non-APD version overly harsh. But I must admit differences in the some of the sample shots, albeit very minor at times... but the APD images were more pleasant (in a side-by-side comparison). The APD version also comes bundled with a 3-stop ND filter, so that you can continue shooting wide-open outdoors. But this additional APD feature will cost a premium over the non-APD version. The RRP is S$2,199 (bundled together with a 3-stop ND filter, available in Nov'14).

This is the updated Fujifilm lens roadmap, 17 and counting. Next up, the XF16-55mm F2.8R WR... but sadly, I don't think that it would be coming with OIS. We'll, we also know that it is a balance with the size of the lens, adding the OIS would increase the size and weight. So first things first, can't wait to get my hands on the XF50-140!!

Here are some other images of the happenings around the Fujifilm booth - printing, instax, share, X-series, gallery, talks...

I would like to thank Fujifilm Singapore for the opportunity to attend Photokina, and the Fujifilm media briefing. More on Fujifilm]@ Photokina 2014 can be found here - http://www.fujifilm.com/photokina2014/
