Default D70S Metering with SB800

Hi.. Newbie here..

I like to know if the metering by the D70S is accurate if i am taking a photos using SB800 flash unit.

The SB800 is on iTTL mode. So can i assume that the flash unit will automatically calculate the intensity of the flash so as not to wash out the picture?

Also another point.
Let's say the metering by the camera says i am 2-EV underexposed. Does this mean i can counter this by setting the flash to +2EV?

Thanks.
Spencer

As mentioned in another thread... washing out of images or not, depends a lot on how the photographer uses the flash

I-TTL will compensate by itself thats the whole idea, keep the metering to CW or matrix. If u are on I-ttl adding +2 stops on flash based on the camera metering cos its telling under, u'll probably end up with wash out images. Start to worry if u r above f10, thats when u r demanding alot more power from the flash to achieve correct exposure. The recycling time will increase and batteries will drain faster.

+ EV on the flash unit if u tilt your flash. I rarely need to go over +1 esp for fill in 1/3 to 2/3 is good enough to preserve highlights. If u have attach a large bounce card to the flash with the subject close to the camera, u may try to - your EV from the flash unit to avoid blown highlights. hope this helps.

The meter in your viewfinder tells you the effective ambient exposure(areas NOT affected by flash) based on your current aperture/shutter speed combination.

It has nothing to do with the flash exposure.

A good flash exposure is a involves a good balance of ambient + flash exposure, you have to make the decision on the ratio depending on circumstances and intent.

Adding 2EV of flash in this case will just cause you to blow out your flashed subjects.
