Default Help solve light leak on Kiev 88...

Hi guys,

I got my hands on a 2nd hand Kiev 88 last week, while my indoor shots turned out fine, i was rather distrubed by what I saw from 75% of my outdoor shots..

light leaks!!... sigh... quite a common thing apparently for the Kievs... but I've also read that you can quite easily plug the leaks..

Attached is a scan of some slides I took, I just need to know where might the leaks be coming from and how best to plug it.. any one has any advice?

Also, will slotting in the dark slide cause such leaks? shouldn't be right?

Thanks,
Ervine

When the light of the image strike on the film, is upside-down, but for the light leak, is from the body, so it should be from left and bottom of the camera body.

Hope this help

ah.. in that case i think it's almost confirmed that it's coming from the dark slide slot located on the left of the camera body...

I just shined an LED torch on the slot and I can start to see light trickling in thru the slot...

How can I plug the slot up if I still need to put the darkslide back in?

Sorry, it should be right and bottom of the body. Emulsion of the film is facing the lens. If you only have one magazine and don’t intend to dismount it, can use a duct tape of gaffer tape to solve the problem.

I don’t own a camera like this, don’t have any better or proper solution for light leak.

bottom right??

Hm.. u think it's a leak in the mag itself or a leak between mag and body? I actually do hope that I can change mags so duct taping up the whole thing is a last resort...

More likely is between the magazine and the body, if it is the magazine itself, all the black borders/frame will be affected.

ok.. i will test out the most likely leak first.. the dark slide slot...

confirm the leak is from bottom right? and if so... bottom right with the camera lens facing away from me or towards me?

Damn confused abt this coz i read that if the leak on the foto is on the left, the real leak is on the right...

I've never had any leak problems with mine, but then again i used only the NT (new type) backs. These I consider to be superior even to Hasselblad backs in use.

for some strange reason, even the 2nd-hand shops here charge pretty expensive for 120 backs...

on another forum board, i read some people actually used black electrical tape to seal the leak during usage. but, i'm more wary of this cos the tape will leave a stain when u take it off.

Use gaffer tape? I tried that today, will know the results soon enough... assuming I sealed the magazine at right place haha...

well... still leaked...

the thing is, it leaked inconsistently, some frames have very minor leaks (maybe just the mag) but others have the same horrible full scale leak..

I let some people have a look at the new slides with the leaks and both suspect that the shutter is screwed up... if so I can just use my kiev as a super effective paper weight liao... fixing the shutter would probably cost me more than what I paid for the camera to begin with!

Will send it in for a proper diagnostics soon...

from my experience, those minor leaks are frames taht are advanced quickly after exposed, while those full scale one are usually those that are left not advanced for a longer period of time..

should be the foam in the magazine, minor fix..

Hm... hopefully that is the case, coz I've been trying to see if there are leaks thru the shutter but I dont see any...

this is a long shot, but could it be that light is being reflected off the copper shutter? I noticed a small shallow dent in the shutter...

enivre - why not send it to Camera Exchange or Camera Hospital for servicing? perhaps they got the manpower to figure out where's the leaks coming from. haiz... hope u can fix it. shame to see a good cam spolit by leaks.

OT: come to think of it, where did u get ur set? thinking of hunting down a used 88 too.
