you got no clue how hot is can get in Kyoto especially around this time. hot wind and high humidity. before the pics die, i think the geisha drop first.

I encountered Geisha(s) exactly once while I was in Kyoto for five days. Two of them were visiting a temple. From time to time some visitor would stop them in their tracks and they would politely stop and pose.

actually they are not geishas, its a common mistake made by tourists. They are prob tourists themselves dressed up in traditional costumes for the day. there are shops that do that. so they dress in that manner to visit the temples, ride the rickshaws and have their pics taken, either at the shop or have a photographer go along with them.

wow, that's interesting. yup i was wondering what occasion it was that brought geishas to the temple :P the two i saw sure looked and behaved in accordance to my preconceptions...
my gf had experienced one of these "makeovers" before - her host had interesting itnineraries for her :P it was not in kyoto though and nothing full-fledged, and looking at the pic that was taken... welllllllllll... |

This shot was taken when I was in Gion area in Kyoto.
TMC is right...it's not only hotter than Singapore at 33 degrees-c, but it's much more humid too . Kimono + thick layer of make up, well... Frankly, I was more interested in photographing the swarm of photographers who were stalking the Geishas from street to street. It sure reminds me of those scenario where you have CS'er crowding around a model... You should have seen all the equipment they carry...1Ds/1D MK II + 85 1.2L, 14mm 2.8L, D2X, 50 1.0L (Yes, I saw 3 folks carrying that). ![]() |

Stalked!!!! That's like hungry hunting carnivores, the crowd of photographers :P
It's a nice catch. The lone mystical (to me at least) Geisha vs the very public, photo-mad citizenry. |
