Really depend on your budget. SB800 will be a better choice in my opinion.

Depends on what you take. I used a SB800 on and off for about a year bought and sold 2 sets already now finally downgraded to a SB600. The only events I take are probably dog shows and my friends' wedding which is like 3-5 times in a yr mebbe less. my 2 cents worth of comments so please no flames~

The ED version is better the the G one. Better optics. That why cost more. Search the buy sell thread and maybe you can get a 2nd hand one for abt $400. I m using the ED version.
Anyway those prices are list prices should be able to get it lower than that at the shops.

Hi All,

Just want to verify between the difference between ED and G ver lens:

1.) ED lens has metal mount, G has plastic. (also a slight difference in weight)
2.) ED has aperture ring, G does not.

Is this accurate?

u dun compare ED with G, you compare D with G lenses.

ED is just better coating to prevent flare and CA.

Eh....

regardless, G lenses are D lenses.

ED is just the coating on the lens element.
D is the chip that communicates data from lens to body or vice versa.

G lenses does not have ring aperture. They have the chip which denotes D & they can come in ED or non-ED format.

Once a sage commented to me.

"Indoors don't use flash, use flash when shooting outdoors". Go figure.

As for build in flash, the working distance is limited (Watcher stay out of this), power also limited, len hood for <18mm tends to block the flash output also.
