The 50/1.4 is supposedly better optically, with better bokeh and all, and 2/3 stop faster than the 1.8. But the price is more than double, so if you need that extra quality and extra speed, go for it, else the 1.8 will suffice. And at the price of 24-85, I think you can consider a used Tokina 28-70 f/2.6-2.8 ATX Pro II as well. Who knows, you might even be left with some unused cash for film, etc. ![]() Regards CK |

Hey Nic,
I'd recommend you to visit http://www.kenrockwell.com Look under lens review. His reviews are pretty good. |

Strictly based on just what is mentioned in your msg. Technically I prefer the 50 f1.4 for its large aperture, then 50 f1.8. The 24-85 is last. The rest depends on what other lens you already have, what is your budget and what is your shooting profile. The 1.4 cost about 2x more than the 1.8. Mind u the zoom offer many good options especially in close with people.

It is not that the canon's 1.4 is exceptionally good or its 1.8 is less than other brands. The truth is almost the other way round. Since you use Nikon the horizontal comparison should be useful. |

I belive the F1.4 is of better build than the f1.8.
Something the the same model with the samller aperture will have a round hole or an additional aperture blade. This will create a better background. But for this case, you got to look up on it. I know 85f1.8 and 85f1.4 have this different. If your wallet can afford it, go get the f1.4. You never know when you will need that extra speed.
