    Yes, AF stands for Autofocus.
    There are few types of lens meant for different purposes, Wideangle, Normal (50mm prime), Telephoto, Reflex, zoom and special purpose(such as micro len) lens.

    AF = Auto Focus.

    FE = Nikon's early (read 1976 or 8) semiautomatic, semielectronic SLR with Aperture Priority. I have one of these.

    FM = Nikon's early fully mechanical SLR (grandfather of the highly renowned FM2. Can operate without batteries).

    FG = Nikon's early SLR with Program, Shutter and Aperture priority and even TTL flash.

    All are discontinued. All are Manual Focus cameras.

    There are hundreds of lenses out there, depends on what you need/want.

    Regards

    a new one is abt 600. Unless it's really good condition. Can it really cost so much?

    Pardon my ignorance.

    A 50/1.8 AFD is no bad and cost abt $170-190 if you can find it. It's out of stock in most places.

    Try to get the D version as it has more resell value.

    That I don't know, it's what I see at a 2nd hand camera store. I've also seen as low as $400 odd.
