His set is sound like a server for me. Totally over kill or just use as normal workstation.

First off let me put a few things in perspective.

Photoshop CS2 runs better with 2 gigs plus of RAM allocated to it.

Nikon Capture and Phase One capture both run considerably faster with 1.5 gigs of RAM allocated to them.

Both CS2 and either NC or P1C are run concurrently in my workflow.

When shooting I normally shoot in RAW + JPG fine when using one of my DSLR's. This results in file storage requirements of around 23 image per Gig of HDD. One a fairly typical assignment I may shoot anywhere from 50 to 500 shots. When I'm shooting with MF digital the file sizes are larger, typically around 50-100mb per image. On rare occasions I double up with a friend and use his LF scanning back that produces images of around 330mb per image.

Given the maxim that time is money and the fact that I really don't like spending all my time processing images then the faster a system is the better I like it. For the sake of this discussion assume I process 100 images a night. Each second I save during processing adds up to 100 seconds, not a lot so it seems, but given that the savings on opening and converting RAW files is more like 15-20 seconds, plus other time savings then the total over a night is typically 1500-2000 seconds just in this one operation. That means between 25 and 35 minutes per 100 images. In actual fact the real savings per 100 images total up to around 65 minutes. Over a year that adds up to around 300 hours, which at my normal post processing fee (built in to the cost of the photoshoot) is over 30,000 SGD, a saving that is passed on to my clients.

I'll back Ian up on that. PS CS2 + NC running concurrently sucks up my entire 1GB RAM and D2X files are a headache and pain in the ass to open and maniuplate. Try it and you'll know.
