Default Which slave for 550EX?

Dear all,

Would like to know what flash(s) can be the slave of 550EX, i understand all other EX flashes can be used. What about other types? or other brands? how to I see?

And how is the flash exposure of the slave controlled?

Cheers and Thanks

Tried using it with the 580ex without problems. Not sure if I should use the 580ex as the master to maximise the ETTL-II or will it be effective even as slave.

ETTL II is on the body, not the flash

This has been discussed before many times, and I shall say it once more..

ALL EX-series flashes support ETTL-II

Thanks for the pointer +evenstar. Was actually misinformed that 580ex supports ETTL-II whereas the 550ex doesn't. Has read further into this and managed to get the following discussion about it:

"All EX flashes will work in ETTL-II mode with the 1DmkII. It's not just limited to the 580EX. The 580EX does NOT have ETTL-II logic built into it. ETTL and ETTL-II is a function of the camera bodies, not the flash models. If anybody is going to buy the 580EX because of its ETTL-II capability, then they're buying it for the wrong reason. Buy the 580EX because it's more powerful than the 550EX. Buy it because it's smaller and lighter than the 550EX. Buy it because it re-charges faster than the 550EX. But don't buy it because somebody is telling you that the 580EX has ETTL-II because it doesn't. The 580EX is compatible with both ETTL and ETTL-II."

People might have been confused by some other brands where changes in flash algorithm requires purchasing of new flash units.

Thanks for replying... to my question. May I know the brand/model/price of your slaves? Its optically triggered or ..IR? or how? And how do you adjust the exposure of the slaves?

Optical triggered one. Just those silver colour small digital slaves. Can get at around 60 bucks. One is Civica and one is Sunpak. But cannot adjust power.

I think there're more powerful slaves that can adjust power and optical trigger too. But very expensive.
