A lot of photography boils down to the basics.
What you are facing is a problem with the basics.

    Ask yourself, what affects DOF?
Focal length, focus distance, bkgnd distance, aperture

Less DOF - longer FL, near focus distance, further bkgnd distance, larger aperture.

If you are constrained by some of those parameters, you will have to play with the others to get that shallow DOF.

As for how you should shoot (head shots, full body, etc), its entirely up to you as the photographer.
And also knowing what your equipment can give you.

Shoot more and be more conscious of what/how you shoot and what your equipment can do.
You will get there for sure

Know your gears, know what results you want to produce, than use your skills to overcome all odds to create what you forsee.
The right gears can't do much if you don't have the above.

It is very difficult to get a full body shot with a shallow depth of field. Cause you either have to use a very short focal length or youll have to move quite a distance away from the subject. And distance and focal length play a part in a shallow dof. Aight suggest uu use a bokeh backdrop w/ 3 point lighting

I today saw ppl using 70-200mm whereby the cosplayer is about 1.5m in front only..

Head shots. Walked around today with a 70mm prime on crop sensor.. Hard to take anything much other than head shots

I'm one of those snipers I guess though I was there for 40mins only. There's a method to the madness, as you can get priceless expressions and the 'bokeh' you mentioned. I used the 300mm. For example of todays random shots

    Deadpool
