Default Really Confuse.....

What Lense to buy?

Is the Kit lens from Canon 350D is soft or it's just me?
I thinking about getting a standard zoom lens for my self, but kind of confuse oh what lense to buy.
I really Want a super sharp lens with a reasonable value.
My budget is below 1000. What do u think i should get?

MY consideration:

1. Get a 50mm f/1.8 (S$160)

2. Tamron AF28-300mm F/3.5-6.3 XR Di LD Aspherical (IF) MACRO (how much??)
I like the raneg but Is this lens sharp??

3. Tamron AF 24-135mm f/3.5-5.6 AD Aspherical (IF) Macro ( how much?)
Heard that this lens is sharp

4. Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di LD (how much??)
I don't really like the range but i heard it's very sharp also.

I am confused. Anyone who can enlighten me or make me more confuse???
COz, I heard that L lenses is v sharp, but i don't think it's a good start-up lens since I am still beginner to SLR thing.

first thing first - do u understand the basics of getting a sharp pic? ie - focal length rule (or guideline. but lets not nitpick), hand-holding techniques etc...

ur kit lens might not be the problem. perhaps u shld post some pics and lets see wats the prob?

You may wanna post some shots and settings of your shots of these "soft" pictures.
The kit lens can be very sharp, but it depends on some factors - just like any lens you intend to buy.

Hi, I am using kit lens mostly, and have no problems with it (I think because I don't compare it with L lens ). A little unsharp mask with PS does wonders too.

You can see this website on how to make the best use of your kit lens.

I would think that the sharpest and most practical of the lot is the tamron 28-75. For a reasonable price of abt $600+ new and abt $500 for a used one. 50mm is cheap and good but since it's not a zoom lens, it will not be as versatile.

thanx clicknick for the website! It's really helpful.
found this in the website you gave me click nick, just for references. Wonder if it's that bad.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I bought the 300D/Rebel kit several months ago and feel lens is pretty good. Then I got the 50/1.8II and found it is better. So I will use it whenever it is possible. My main target is portrait, so I bought the 85/1.8, 24-70L and 135/2L. Now when I backup my old pictures I am really regret that I should have bought those L lenses earlier.

18-55 is soft unless you stick with f8 and f/11. Corner is always soft at 18mm. Contrast is not good, color is not good either. No way to use polarizor. Without using other high quality lenses, namely 85/1.8, you don't know the potenial of your 300D.

But if you ask me whether it worths $100, I would say get one if you don't have the money to buy L lenses. Since I won't buy a 17-40 or 16-35, I will keep this lens in case I need wide angle for landscape. But I really doubt if I will ever use it again.

Brother, what exactly do you want to shoot before others could advise on the types of lenses should you buy?

for objects, there are a few lens u can choose from.. the kit lens is one lens u can use. if not, the tamron one is good. you can also use that to shoot portraiture. also the 50mm F1.8. it's not bad for the price and u can use that to shoot portraits and objects. also using the reverse 50mm method, u can do some macro.

of cos there are other lens u can use like those 85mm, 135mm lens u can choose. not forgetting the wides also, which gives you a diff perspective when shooting still life.

a few wides.. 16-35, 17-40 or 17-35, since you are using 350D, u might want to consider the 10-22efs, or third party lenses like sigma 12-24 or the tokina 12-24.

fredmiranda.com is a good site to read bout lenses. but don't believe wholesale of what they say. always with a pinch of salt.

take a look here also http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Default.aspx

i would say a 17-35 F2.8 and a 50mm 1.8 to start with. i like the diff perspective a wide angle gives. my 2 cents. also take what i say with a pinch of salt. cos what i recommend may not be the best 'start-with' lens for you. just my opinion.

one man's meat, another's possion.
sharpness is subjective. after you get any of the lens in your list, you will be thinking if canon "L" lens "zoom" is better, after you get the "L" lens "zoom", you will find the "L" lens "prime" is sharper.

does that means those in your initial list is crap lens? no, eg 50mm f1.8 is as with most standard lens, cheap & good. it depends on your technics.

Tamron AF28-300mm F/3.5-6.3 XR Di LD Aspherical (IF) MACRO give the the flexibility that 1 lens is enough (lighter this way lor). i used to have a 28-200 for normal shooting (now in dry box cause i switch to prime lens, very subjective choice.).

like you stated, you want a sharp lens with reasonable price, you "heard" (4) is sharper than (3), but dont like the range. than what range are you looking for? which is to you more important?

not all lens from same maker of same model has the same level of sharpness, what if you get a not so good copy of (4), eg, sharpness is like that of (3)?

dont be too eqpt driven. go out shoot with your kit lens, sure you have frineds with other lenses, go out with themn and test those, compare thier shoots with yours. also compare those taken by you with your kit lens and their lens. beside sharpness, there are color, contrast, exposure to look at, but all these can be adjusted by software right?

look at the composition, software can only help to certain extend. straight out of the camera, did those taken by you with your friends lens have better composition?

focal length also has an impact to the photos, have you explore all of the a/m?

just my 2cents thought. pls ignor if it is not comfortable for you.

Just get the tamron 28-75. Not many lenses in this price range gives you f2.8, sharpness even wide open and quality of images. Some people may say that it's not wide enough at 28mm, esp on a 1.6x crop body but you can always retain your kit lens for wide angle shooting, since you won't be able to sell it for much anyway.

Trust me, small price to pay for a (I dare say) lens that is arguably the best in its class and price range.

Forget the super telezooms like 28-300. Their images will never be able to compare.

With the extra cash, you may want to pick up a used 50mm f1.8 ($100) for those low light situations.

Then you are all set for some fun.....

For events, you may need a longer zoom like 70-200 or 70-300, but that's another story for another day.

Erm... my suggestion is u better don't buy any lens yet coz you still don't know what you really gonna shoot and what range you really need. Shoot more with your kit lens till you get the best out of it before you venture into some other "better" lens else no matter how good the lens are, it won't yield good product.

That's pretty true though. I guess you might really want explore a bit more with your kit lens and found out exactly what are the things that you miss from it, then you will know what you are looking for. Like someone mentioned, 1 lens suits this guy might not suit you.

As for sharpness, just aviod the extreme end with the extreme aperture. My Panasonic FZ20 delivers lovely picture when shoot with samll aperture.
