Default recommendations of a good UWA

Hi, currently own a Canon 17-40.

Was thinking of getting a uwa for use on FF but unsure what is good?

    Anyone has recommendations?

define what is "Good" in your own word.

and what are the things that the Canon 17-40 can't give you?

The 17-40 can be used with FF cameras. What is your reason for another one? Budget?

17-40 is already an ultra wide angle lens..

    need f2.8 -> EF 16-35 f2.8L II
if f4 is fine, just hand itchy -> 16-35 f4L

I personally find 17-40 wide enough and good enough for my usage. Thou some despise it's image quality.

Yes, that's something baffling me. I thought the 17-40 was a decent lens, even with FF. Might have lost toouch with Canon though. This was taken with a 5D MKII + 17-40.

Was the 17-40 not wide enough? If that is the case, I think you can looked into Sigma 12-24mm.

Exactly what kind of improvements are you looking at?

The lousy corners of the 16-35 f/2.8 II (even at f/8!) annoys me no end so I'm seriously considering the 16-35 f/4 IS.
The fact it uses 77mm filters and comes with IS is a welcomed bonus.

zeiss 15mm f2.8 distagon ZE. Sharper, faster, wider, less distortion... but you'll probably need to sell a kidney for it...

Tokina 11-16mm. Limited choice for wider after 17-40mm

That's for crop, TS wants a UWA for use on FF. But I don't see a big problem with 17-40.

The Tokina can be used at 15-16mm on a full frame sensor.

That's true, but IMO it's a waste. TS doesn't have a crop body (at least according to his sig), so I don't think it really makes sense to get a lens meant for use on a crop body and then use only the last 2mm of the range...might as well get a Samyang 14mm or something. It's useful for those people who currently use a crop body and want to upgrade to FF though.

Anyway, as for the original question...

    -Sigma 12-24
    -Tokina 16-28
    -Canon 16-35

what's wrong with the 17-40 f4L? I have it and loved it. Unless you want the 16-35mm II f2.8L or the new 17-35 F4L which is a little bit sharper. Unless you're more specific like the fisheye

Honestly, I didn't really like that lens for some reason. But I still think it is good enough for normal use lah.

I think obviously the TS is looking for the 14-24.

Oh. Decided to stick with the 17-40 in the end. Definitely not looking for a 14-24.
