Smile IR shooting in the RAW ?

Hi guys,

A short question.
What do you think would be the better WB setting when taking IR photo's in RAW save mode.

Auto WB, or do think it would be better tuned to a particular colour temperature.

Thanks for any feedback on this.

Cheers

Pablo,

I have shot IR in RAW with both CWB and Auto WB. From my experience, both yield about the same results after post processing.

Shoot in CWB, like we always do with a patch of brightly grass, you can post process the usual way.

Shoot in Auto WB, you will need to use NC to do the post processing by changing the white balance. In NC, after loading the RAW pic I change white balance to Flourescent Standard and bring the colour temperature slider down to the extreme left. From there, save as jpeg and use PS to do further post processing.

Shooting IR in RAW and Auto WB gives an added advantage. You can at anytime shoot any scene in colour you wish without having to change WB setting, just don't fit the IR filter over the lens.

You may have seen the below picture I posted previously. Shot 2 pics in RAW Auto WB, one colour, one IR. Combined the together. Did not use a tripod, so the 2 pics are not 100% fitting.

Hope this is of help to you.

Hi teerex,

Yes, that is quite a nice shot !

I was thinking that I should choose Auto WB with IR filter on if shooting RAW.
Then changing the WB on the computer.

I did not recieve the Nikon software I was expecting to, but do have PhotoShop CS2
and it will work with NEF files.
Only I have not had the results I would have expected so far ....

For example, I have changed the colour temperature down and just don't see anything worth working with.

Mind you, I have not done done too many tries so far, but I find it easier using custom WB and .jpg files.

My guess on using RAW, especially with IR, was that it offered a greater tuning of the overall colour,
due to the ability to fine tune the WB.

I may have read more into it than there is

Cheers (thanks for your reply)

After trying to shoot IR in RAW with Auto WB. I have gone back to shoot IR in Large jpeg.

There's not much to adjust in WB in IR and files are smaller, loads faster and processes faster.

So for me, it's still jpeg for IR.

Hi teerex,

Yes, I am beginning to think the same way actually.

Till someone comes up with a good reason to shoot in RAW, I think I will just use .jpg fine.

I can see the benefit in "non IR" but I don't think it applies to IR itself.

As yo say," .jpg is definately faster + takes less card space".

Cheers
