    Sad but true.

If the family cannot afford the bills and there are no chances of recovery, the victim may prefer that their family pull the plug earlier so that the suffering will end.

Life sustaining coma treatment in Tan Tock Seng hospitals is about $10k per day (at the top end) on average in your own room, specialist doctor, monitoring equipment, testing and treatment. Do the math even if you lower the standard to the most 'affordable', it would still be right up there in the high numbers. Who's going to pay for it as everyone hold on to hope with little means to pay for it?

I know a family who had that happen to their mum who lapse into a coma from her stroke. Everything that indicate brain activities has flatline and needed machines to sustain all the usual functions like breathing, heart monitor..etc. $10k per day.. by the 15th day they had to stop and give up all hope or everyone had to put up the money for everyday she remain at the hospital. $150k in Singapore is not peanut. So I can relate why this old lady's family may have to give up especially if you have little saving, who has enough family member ti t earn enough or fast enough each month to pay including exhausting your Medishield.

I don't want to say too much on this thread into the CPF thing but just a short note that I can related to this. Using CPF to save life. Once you have exhausted all your money, saving..etc short of borrowing from loan shark(or bank), even if you have the money to pay for further treatment with your CPF or say my dying love one's CPF... I can not draw from it to pay for those life threatening situation. "But the good thing" is, if he/she die we can get that money afterwards. Someone has to spill blood before that ever happens. Ask the folk here, you rather see your love one alive with you or take their money after they go? Enuff said.

No one claimed that our CPF system will protect anyone from medical costs. It's not meant to be.

We have to be responsible for our own medical coverage. Buy private hospital coverage. Is everyone in this forum covered with some form of hospital coverage? I can say no, coz there will always be ppl who thinks insurance is a con job, scam, blah blah blah.

Then when something happens and landed in hospital, who gets the blame? Our govt, our CPF system? His neighbors? His dog? His parents?

Of coz we can sit here and blame govt for any misfortune. But did we take personal responsibility to protect ourselves in the first place?

And don't blame our CPF if you don't know everything about it.

Is CPF = Worldclass Medical Insurance? Did I refer to CPF? Read again before you make such statements.
On the other hand: Isn't it the responsibility of the government / social systems to protect those who cannot protect themselves (for whatever reason) or are denied the protection by the private insurance companies (who finally want to make money, not delivering a social service)?

Not so ez to just expect govt to cover everyone. U wan them to cover you from birth? Can, but prepare to 50% tax yearly. And even with this tax, its still not enough

See what's happening to those countries with your ideal kind of govt medical insurance?

Surely you don't want us to be like them one day.

The medical scheme in UK,US,EU are bankrupt.

We need to be responsible for ourselves. Govt can only do so much.

Did we find out why those families can't afford the medical bills? What are the real reasons? No money to buy or they don't care in the first place? When an insurance agent approach them, did they just shoo the agent away? Then whose fault?

What about their daily lifestyle? Bad unhealthy diet with no exercise? Then blame who? Heavy smoker and drinker? Blame who?

Don't just say govt shld do this and that.

How many of us in this forum has 100% medical coverage? Do you have?

Somebody from a building near my logicality threw something made of glass down yesterday which barely missed a child as the mom pulled in time. Cops were there in the evening investigating. Makes we worried to walk near buildings.. People throwing garbage out the window is dangerous.
