Default Sigma 28-70 F2.8 EX

Anyone have this lens ?
How is it ?
Compared with the Tokina ATX 28-70 F2.6-2.8 ?
Think there is a new model for the Tokina
vs Canon 28-70 F2.8 L ? This one cost 3x as much...
Thinking of upgrading from my Canon 28-105 USM

Appreciate comments

The Tokina 28-70 f/2.6-2.8 ATX Pro II has been discontinued. CP, AP, MS Colour, FotoGuide all no longer has it. The only way to get it is to get it used.

The new one is the 28-70 f/2.8 SV, which is not released yet.

If you have a choice, get the Tokina over the Sigma. The build quality alone is more than worth it.

Actually, i am using one it. Bought used.

Generally, It feel well made. and rather heavy with a 77mm filter thread.

The zoom ring is a bit tight formy liking and it will be worse if I am pointing the lens downward.

The focus ring maybe a bit slim for those with bigger thumb. The focus ring when turn in MF will have a rubbing sound sometimes, if it is pointing downward.

AF is rather fast and quiet and the material look more beautiful than normal "black metal". The lens pounch and hood that comes with it is nicely done too.

Haven't have a chance to use a tokina, so I can't comment on that.

A good buy for it price.
I was considering the Sigma 28-70 and the Tokina 28-80. in the end, I settle for the Tokina one as I felt more comfortable with it. After all it is internal focusing.

Thanks, CK

What about optical quality ? I'm more concerned about this and am wondering how it wd compared to my Canon 28-105.
Am sure it is an upgrade if I change but wondering whether its worth it.

Tokinas are usually better made. Also seems that Sigma is known to have compatibility problems with Canon...according to most US website.

Well, I have tried neither the Canon or the Sigma 28-70, but I have tried the Sigma 24-70 on someone's D30 and didn't like it. Stiff zoom, noisy AF with the whirring sound, etc are among the things I don't like. And the biggest thing about the 24-70 is the 81mm filter thread.

The Tokina is generally rather well reviewed. I just bought mine used and have not seen the pics from it.

Does internal focusing refer to the front filter thread dun rotate when focusing?

If yes, the sigman EX 28-70F2.8 is internal focus as well.

I have the older Sigma 28-70EX. The newer one is 28-70EX DF where the front doesn't move. If the older one is still available (still listed on the sigma site), its cheaper than the newer one.

The 28-70EX is a good lens. Sharper than Nikkor 28-70D 3.5-4.5 at f/4 and f/5.6. I can't tell the difference at f/8.
