Changi is not about the recreation facilities or shops or restaurants. Changi is not just the good mortar & brick, high tech equipment, asphalt runway, ambulances, hospital backup and fire fighting engines. The human factor - the airport staff, the air traffic controllers, medical emergency crew, security personnel, etc - is also good.
When Qantas A380 had engine trouble, the pilot Richard de Crespigny could head for Batam airport. But he and the crew chose to fly back to Changi to make emergency landing. Later when interviewed, IIRC he said Changi is a pilot's dream airport. (presumably he meant for safety reasons)
