It is another round for DPM Teo. I think he feels let down by the Customs/Immigration police. Every time got to explain on their behalf.

Don't just say the mechanical barrier malfunctioned. It is the whole system that failed.

What prompted the driver to crash it? Because he believed (correctly) that the SG police would not dare to shoot him.

The same driver would not even think of doing this in Indonesia or North Korea or Israel. Because that is certain death.

Well, as someone I know kindly put it. He does his job despite being unappreciated by the masses so ordinary citizens in their comfort zone can bash, criticise and whine without a thought to under the protective environment of peace and security which he contributed a part of as the alternative consequences will just be unthinkable.

It is well known in the US: if you hear "THIS IS THE POLICE! FREEZE!" If you as much as twitch a muscle, you risk a bullet in your way.

I believe most likely the official press release will be :

    1. Caught within 5 hours. Well done ! (As compared to the previous case)

    2. We will continue to train our men to take effective action. See our constable brandishing his baton is his video to show SPF means business ?

    3. Higher barriers, yes , barriers so high that the car will crash into it instead of driving over it.

And yes, there is actually good in all this; incidents like these are needed at once to upkeep the vigilance in the police & defense forces.

Hri Kumar criticised ICA police saying how can normal saloon car so easily bash through barrier and what if car was loaded with ordinance. (meaning bomb material). He said within 1 hour travel time, most parts of Singapore can be reached. Implying that a massive car bomb could theoretically be set off in any part of SG.

Yes, it is exceptionally slow follow up by ICA and SG police. 45 minutes after the incident, the taxi drivers were notified to look out for the car that crashed through.

As expected, this is a drug dealer carrying lots of narcotics in the spare tyre of the car.
It is death sentence if arrested at customs check point, so he might as well bash through barrier.
Driver will get rid of evidence and abandon car. Hire expensive lawyer to defend when the police catch up with him later.

Need to have this sign prominently displayed at SG Customs check point with changes to the wording to warn that barrier crashers will be shot.

If they really wanted to stop the car, they'd need a fully retractable concrete barrier. But I suppose some bean counter's got to do the cost calculation...

This time the police outnumber the suspect by at least 10 to 1 yet nothing was achieved. How many committees of inquiry must we convene before we establish the impotence and incompetence of our forces? Sorry to disappoint Mr Teo again.

Actually there is no need to built new barriers or whatever.

They just need to station, on daily roster duty, 1 to 2 TP bikers at the checkpoint. any car or bike bashing through and try to run away, the TP bikers are activated and they can just give chase and report on the location.

SG is so small, the road system is so simple, and plus how many cars can really outrun a TP bike, chasing a car is really easy.

The biker doesn't need to stop or confront the driver. Just need to follow closely and report location. SPF can then easily set up road block or send reinforcements.

    Sigh..... scholars never think again...

Today's ST reported the ICA statement: "An auxiliary police officer smashed the right window of the 24-year-old car's back passenger seat...." Don't they know the video is already circulating and all the did was to try unsuccessfully to open the rear right passenger's door. They will say whatever to cover their own backside even in the Inquiry.

This is ever more serious: that video should never have been leaked.

No, such video material should always be public material. That would put the necessary pressure on ICA officers to do their job properly and the upper layer have no chance the hide things and cover their bums. Hiding video material and information? Well, maybe that's the style of uncle Kim and the likes. In the end, only FUD will blossom. And KPT talk ..

Police brutality is one kind of deterrent besides the legal charge.

I'm not sure about now, but when I was still in Indo, Police is the least problem you have to worry about if one is driving like that.

Mob justice is certain death. Pray that police reach you first.
